Welcome to summertime in the neighborhood. It kicked off in a grand fashion and not in a good way.

Saturday afternoon near Independence and Brooklyn, a local man thought it would be wise to shoot at the PoPo. Not so much, as police returned fire which killed the suspect.

Later that same afternoon, a man near Independence and Gladstone was fired at. No word on the extent of his injuries.

Early Sunday morning, a man in a car near Benton Boulevard and Anderson Avenue was shot. He was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.

Then, late Monday night, someone drove down Windsor Avenue and emptied a clip into the air while three pedestrians standing nearby looked on in horror.

Throw in to the mix a recent spate of salon robberies in the neighborhood and it’s not a pleasant recipe for a safe or fun summer.

Given the police department’s recent turn to social programming over law enforcement, we’re not real excited about the possibilities for safer streets in Kansas City.
