Fire broke out this afternoon at the Northeast View Apartments at the Southeast corner of Lexington and Garfield at about 1:30 p.m. The north breezeway of 301-303 Garfield was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived.

Within minutes, the fire was brought under control, and smoldering bedding, clothing and debris were dragged from a lower level apartment to the parking lot, then sprayed for hot spots.

Fire Investigators along with Police Bomb and Arson Detectives remain on the scene investigating. According to Battalion Chief of Station 23 Mike Eller, the fire and smoke damaged 12 of the units in the building and displaced five families. No injuries were reported, and the Red Cross is working with displaced families with emergency needs such as temporary housing, food and clothing.
