Filings underway for state House and Senate seats

Filing is underway for both state Senate and House seats and a number of candidates have already filed.

For the 19th House District, which now represents Historic Northeast, only one candidate has filed – current state Rep. John Rizzo, D-Kansas City.

Two candidates filed for the 7th Senate District, which now covers a portion of Kansas City, and include Rep. Jason Holsman, D-Kansas City, and incumbent Sen. Jane Cunningham, R-Chesterfield.

The 9th Senate District has one candidate, incumbent Sen. Kiki Curls, D-Kansas City, and the 11th Senate District has one candidate, former state Rep. and House Minority Leader Paul LeVota, D-Independence.

The new state Senate boundaries aren’t set in stone yet and must still be reaffirmed by the bipartisan commission following the 15-day public comment period. The proposed boundaries could also be challenged in court. Current deadline for filing is March 27.
