KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Between basketball fans and convention attendees, Kansas City, will welcome thousands of visitors over the next.

City officials want residents and guests to move around the city as seamlessly as possible. These events will impact traffic flow and parking in downtown Kansas City; please allow additional time to get to and from events. The following streets will be closed during the Big 12 Tournament:

  • Grand Boulevard (between 13th Street and Truman Road): Closed until 6 a.m. Sunday, March 13.
  • 14th Street (between Walnut Street and Grand Boulevard): Closed until 6 a.m. Sunday, March 13.
  • Walnut Street (between 13th and 14th Streets): Closed until 1 p.m. Sunday, March 13.
  • Truman Road (between Grand Boulevard and Oak Street): Closed until 6 a.m. Sunday, March 13.

In addition, Kansas City’s Big 12 Run will close the following streets on Saturday, March 12, starting at 10 a.m. and lasting until roughly 12:30 p.m. or until the conclusion of the race:

  • Grand Boulevard (between Eighth and 12th Streets, and between Truman and Gillham Roadss.)
  • Eighth Street (between Grand Boulevard and Holmes Street)
  • Holmes Street (between Eighth and 18th Streets and between 30th and 31st Streets)
  • Truman Road (between Holmes Street and Woodland Avenue and between Grand Boulevard and Oak Street)
  • Woodland Avenue (between Truman Road and 18th Street)
  • 18th Street (between Woodland and Highland Avenues and between Holmes Street and Grand Boulevard)
  • Highland Avenue (between 18th Street and 17th Terrace)
  • 17th Terrace (between Highland Avenue and The Paseo)
  • The Paseo (between 17th Terrace and 31st Street)
  • 31st Street (between The Paseo and Holmes Street)
  • 30th Street (between Holmes St. and McGee)
  • McGee (between Holmes Street and Gillham Road)
  • Gillham Road (between McGee and Grand Boulevard)
  • Oak Street (between Truman Road and Ninth Street)
  • Ninth Street (between Oak Street and Grand Boulevard)

The city is asking all pedestrians and drivers to observe caution or seek alternate routes during this period. For more information about the tournament, street closures and parking garage maps, visit www.VisitKC.com/Big12Basketball.

If you have to get downtown, the city offers mass transportation and more than 40,000 parking spaces downtown. Information regarding parking can be found online at the city’s parking page, which includes a list of parking garages maintained by the city. While you are downtown, try Kansas City’s two new parking applications (apps): The “Click and Park” app allows for pre-pay parking in city-owned parking garages and the Parkmobile app allows visitors and residents to pay for parking online, without digging for coins at a meter. Spaces are available for pre-order at city garages through the Click and Park reservation system at www.kcmo.clickandpark.com.

The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) operates local and express routes, demand-response, bus rapid transit, paratransit, and vanpool services. The Main Street MAX line is offering more frequent service for the Big 12 Tournament. Event goers can find out how to get from one place to another efficiently and inexpensively at www.kcata.org. Additionally, Kansas City’s taxi cabs will post a temporary taxi stand starting at noon on March 9 through midnight on March 12. The stand will be located on 13th Street, between Oak Street and Grand Boulevard; during this time taxis will turn North on Grand Boulevard.
