Third District City Councilman and Mayoral candidate Jermaine Reed spoke at the inaugural sign placement Monday morning, officially designating The Paseo as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The sign is the first of roughly two-hundred that will be replaced with the renaming of the iconic boulevard. Some in the community are unhappy about the change and have mounted an initiative petition to overturn the name change citing The Paseo’s  iconic, 120+ year history and the community’s overwhelming opposition to the change. As of press time, the group’s petition was awaiting approval by the city attorney. We’ll have more on this as the story develops.

CORRECTION: In our print edition, we stated that approximately sixty signs would be replaced. We later received a higher estimate of closer to two-hundred.
