(Editor’s Note: This letter to the editor is written in response to the Aug. 14 Buzz column titled “Low clearance line” regarding the number of semi truck accidents at the railroad overpass at Independence and Wilson Road. Drivers routinely ignore the 12-foot clearance sign.)

Dear Editor:

The road was built before the bridge, so the city is not at fault! The railroad built the bridge according to the rules at the time of construction, so the railroad is not at fault! Truckers have been labeled the safest drivers on the road, so the trucker is not at fault!

Which one of the above statements is not true? Come on, the jerk can’t read; that’s why we have Pearl Vision Centers. I’d hate to be stopped at a stop sign (maybe the solar one the city put up) and have this blind gear-buster roaring down on me.

Maybe putting up another height sign at Independence Avenue and Hardesty warning of the killer bridge might help. You’re right, though, London Bridges will fall down!

Sincerely,

Larry Phillips
