The City of Kansas City is now accepting applications for the 2013 Kansas City, Mo., Opportunities Scholarship Fund, a scholarship grant program funded by The Port Authority of Kansas City, Mo., and area casino gaming operators.

The scholarship serves Kansas City, Mo., young adults ages 17 to 25 who live in households that have a total annual income of 80 percent or less of the median income of Kansas City, Mo., households.

Scholarship applicants also must be pursuing educational opportunities at an accredited or certified college, university or vocational/technical school and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
Scholarship awards will be a minimum of $1,000 per academic year and can be used for tuition, books, room and board and activity fees.

To apply for the scholarship, individuals must submit an application along with a high school transcript or GED certificate; a 300-word maximum essay; a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, employer or clergy member; and the most recent IRS tax forms of all members of the household. Applications and related materials are due May 1, 2013. Scholarship recipients will be notified by June 14, 2013.

Scholarships are renewable if recipients remain full-time students, stay in good academic standing with their school and continue to live in a household that has a total annual income 80 percent or less of median income of the city, defined as:

Two – Less than $35,963
Three – Less than $43,875
Four – Less than $56,462
Five – Less than $66,891
Six – Less than $75,523
Seven – Less than $85,233
Eight –  Less than $94,943
Nine or more – Less than $113,644
