Bishop Sullivan ElderCut program benefits seniors

With the recent snow, it may not feel like spring, but spring is officially here.

That means it’s time to begin applying to Bishop Sullivan Center’s ElderCut program.

Now in its fourth year, ElderCut provides lawn mowing services free of charge to seniors on a fixed income who are unable to mow the lawn themselves or don’t have a nearby family member or friend to mow their lawn.

During the summer, a volunteer crew mows each senior’s lawn every two weeks.

“The best part is it’s free. There’s absolutely no cost to them (seniors),” said Bishop Sullivan Office Manager Angela Jonas.

Jonas said Bishop Sullivan founded the program as another way to help seniors and to further serve the Historic Northeast neighborhood.

“Any time we can help people in our own neighborhood, that’s a good thing, particularly to keep the neighborhood looking nice is something that we like to do,” she said.

Bishop Sullivan is currently accepting ElderCut requests. Seniors or those who know a senior in need may apply for the program by calling Angela Jonas, (816) 231-0984.

“For most of the elderly people on fixed incomes, they don’t have extra money, and with the rising cost of food and medicine, it’s just one less thing they have to worry about if we can provide this service for them,” she said.
