Crucial Catch Day – Intercept Cancer
On Wednesday, October 17, from 8:am – 3:pm, , the Samuel U. Rodgers center is hosting a community health event, which will provide free cancer outreach, education, and breast health screening for those in need. Coffee and Conversation
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host a coffee and conversations event on Wednesday, October 17 from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in the 3rd Floor Grand Reading Room. Customers experiencing homelessness and customers interested in social justice issues are invited to join library staff for coffee and pastries.

 

ESL Conversation Group
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host an ESL Conversation Group on Wednesday, October 10, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. In class you will learn basic English skills: grammar, listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, and conversation. Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Youth Game Night
The North-East branch of the Kansas City Public Library invites youth ages 10-18 to come play Wii, Xbox, Playstation and more in Room A from 4-5:30 on Thursday, October 18.

 

Drop in tech coach
The North-East branch of the Kansas City Public Library will bring in a tech coach to assist the public on Thursday, October 18, from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Get answers to questions about Microsoft Word and Excel; the internet; email, formatting a resume and online applications; syncing your smart phone, and so much more.

 

Friday, October 19

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, October 19, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, stength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

Boy Scout Troop 80 Chili DInner
Join Troop 80 at Holy Rosary (Scalabrini Hall, 910 Pacific, Columbus Park) from 12-7 p.m. for the annual chili dinner. Proceeds ensure that every boy goes to camp. Price is $6 for adults and $3 for children and includes chili, salad, hot dog, dessert and drink.

Sheffield Neighborhood Association Meeting
The next meeting of the Sheffield Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, October 22, beginning at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church (1029 Bennington).

 

Genealogy Workshop
The North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host a genealogy workshop on Monday, October 22 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. This program is a workshop to help direct beginners and people who have a general idea of what they want to search for regarding their family tree. There will be a few laptops available as well as handouts to track and organize research.

 

Tuesday, October 23

Story time at Central Library
Come out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Tuesday, October 23, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for story time. Join the library every Tuesday for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. The library encourages patrons to talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special because parking is free!

 

Kansas City Museum – Dia de los Muertos
The Kansas City Museum and Mattie Rhodes Center are hosting a free Dia de los Muertos celebration on Sunday, October 21st from 1-4 p.m. at Corinthian Hall (3218 Gladstone Blvd). The even will include live music by Mundo Nouvo and puppetry by StoneLion Puppet Theatre. Attendees can decorate sugar skulls, make tissue flowers, sample traditional breads from Panaderia de las Americanas and contribute to a community altar installation. Free face painting will be from 2-4 p.m. by Sister Act Face Painting.

The Indian Mound and Lykins Neighborhood Associations will host a Fall Festival and Pumpking Patch on October 27 from 2-4 p.m. Free pumpkins, cider and donuts, ZooMobile, kids’ activities and pony rides will make for a day of fall fun.

 

“Scare-it” Halloween
Join the Scarritt Neighborhood on October 31 for Trick-or-Treating, a Haunted House and other spooky surprises. The event starts at the Kansas City Museum and continues down Mersington Street.
