Anthony Kennedy and the future of the Supreme Court
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will take a deep dive into the life’s work of retired Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy on Wednesday, October 10, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The country convulsed earlier this year when Justice Anthony Kennedy, a frequent swing vote on the Supreme Court, announced that he would retire at the end of July. Frank Colucci, an associate professor of political science at Purdue University Northwest who specializes in constitutional law, discusses his legacy and what Kennedy’s departure—and replacement—mean for our nation’s highest court and potentially its direction on such highly charged issues as abortion and gay rights.
Kennedy provided the deciding vote in key cases involving affirmative action, the 2000 presidential election, religious expression, gay rights, and executive power to detain suspected terrorists.
Colucci is the author of Justice Kennedy’s Jurisprudence: The Full and Necessary Meaning of Liberty, a leading academic study of the retired 82-year-old justice.
