ESL Conversation Group
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host an ESL Conversation Group on Wednesday, October 3, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. In class you will learn basic English skills: grammar, listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, and conversation. North-East Branch Improvements
A public meeting discussing the planned improvements to the North-East branch of the Kansas City Public Library system will be held on Wednesday, October 3, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will be encouraged to share their thoughts on 1) what they like about the library; 2) what new programs and services they would like to see; 3) How a refreshed North-East branch should look; 4) Why the library is important to the community; and 5) what technology should be made available at the branch. Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Drop in tech coach
The North-East branch of the Kansas City Public Library will bring in a tech coach to assist the public on Thursday, October 4, from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Get answers to questions about Microsoft Word and Excel; the internet; email, formatting a resume and online applications; syncing your smart phone, and so much more.

 

NEAT Quality Affordable Housing Forum
Northeast Alliance Together (NEAT) will host an affordable housing forum at the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Thursday, October 4, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The panel will be moderated by Jordan Schiele with Jerusalem Farm, and will also include Jennifer Tidwell, KCMO Section Manger (who had a prominent role in the development of its Housing Policy), Mayoral Candidates and City Councilmen Scott Wagner and Quinton Lucas, and affordable housing developers Todd Lieberman and Gloria Ortiz Fisher. Refreshments will be served.

 

Friday, October 5

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, September 28, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, stength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

Northeast High School Hall of Fame induction ceremony
Northeast High School’s alumni association will host its Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, October 6 at the high school’s Markey-Peters Field House, beginning at 10 a.m. This year’s honorees will be Maryilyn Deister, former synchronized swimming coach and physical education teacher (1950 to 1960); Elise and Suzanne Jones, track and cross country athletes (1979 to 1982); Waunita Small, former boys and girls cross country and track coach, girls basketball and volleyball coach, and athletic director (beginning 1970); and the 1954-55 boys basketball team.

Lykins Neighborhood meeting
The next Lykins Neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, October 8, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 3704 E. 12th St. Join Lykins neighbors as they review crime and grime, organize neighborhood cleanups, and focus on creating a better community. Other neighborhoods in Historic Northeast are more than welcome to join.

Independence Plaza Council will host its monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Woodland Elementary School, 711 Woodland Ave., KCMO.

 

Story time at Central Library
Come out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Tuesday, October 9, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for story time. Join the library every Tuesday for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. The library encourages patrons to talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special because parking is free!

 

Medicare: What you need to know
Come out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Tuesday, October 2, from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. for a free informational program about Medicaid. The program explains Medicare in a way that’s easy to understand. This class will be especially helpful for people turning 65 in the next few months. We will meet in the Chairman’s Office on the first floor.

7th Annual Fall Homes Tour
The Northeast Kansas City Historical Society will host its 7th Annual Fall Homes Tour from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13. The first floors of classic turn-of-the-century homes will be featured on this year’s tour; the tour will consist of five fabulous homes and one Grand Church in the Independence Plaza neighborhood. The sales tent for advanced ticket pick-up and also for day-of ticket sales will be set up at 3001 Independence Boulevard, KCMO. Northeast neighborhood clean-up
The next Historic Northeast cleanup will be held on Saturday, October 13th, from 8 a.m. unitl 12 p.m. The City of KCMO will provide three trash compactor trucks at each of three sites: 1) Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood—The west side of The Concourse on Gladstone Blvd headed south between St. John Ave. and Anderson Ave.; 2) Indian Mound Neighborhood—The south side of Budd Park on Budd Park Esplanade between Brighton Ave. and Hardesty Ave.; and 3) Lykins Neighborhood—The south side of Lykins Square Park on E 8th St. between Myrtle Ave. and Jackson Ave.

 

In addition, KCMO will provide a trailer for tires. KCMO will also provide twelve cartons of blue bags for use by the neighborhoods in cleaning up trash on the ground. Each neighborhood will receive two cartons of bags.
