ESL Conversation Group
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host an ESL Conversation Group on Wednesday, August 15, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. In class you will learn basic English skills: grammar, listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, and conversation. Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Drop in tech coach
The Northeast branch of the Kansas City Public Library will bring in a tech coach to assist the public on Thursday, August 16, from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Get answers to questions about Microsoft Word and Excel; the internet; email, formatting a resume and online applications; syncing your smart phone, and so much more.

 

The Art of Science
The Central branch of the Kansas City Public Library will welcome Tyler Thraser on Thursday, August 16, beginning at 6 p.m. for a presentation about the art of science. Thrasher practices what he calls a type of alchemy, growing colorful crystals on the remains of bugs, skulls, and various flora. His drawings, photos, and crystalized pieces are featured in the Library exhibit Noble Synthesis.
The exhibit, the latest in a series curated by Kansas City Art Institute students, runs through September 30, and is underwritten by the Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts and Pam and Gary Gradinger.

 

Friday, August 17

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, August 17, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

Friday in the Park
The Friday in the Park series, in North Kansas City’s Festival Pavilion in Macken Park, will continue on Friday, August 17 from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. All concerts are free and open to the public, and every event features a drawing for prizes donated by local businesses. There is plenty of parking, playgrounds, restrooms and the park is completely handicap accessible. This event is sponsored by the City of North Kansas City. SummerDusk Concert Series
The Northeast Arts KC Summerdusk Free Concert Series will host Slim Hanson & the Poor Choices to play original honky tonk music on Friday, August 17, beginning at 7 p.m. at The Concourse. Bring your own lawn chairs, blankets and coolers for this family-friendly, outdoor event.

Ghost World
The public is invited to a screening of the movie ‘Ghost World’ at Central Library on Saturday, August 18, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Stanley H. Durwood Film Vault. This title is rated R and is recommended for adult audiences only.

Indian Mound Neighborhood Meeting
The Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Monday, August 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Northeast Public Library (6000 Wilson Ave.)

Story time at Central Library
Come out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Tuesday, August 21, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for story time. Join the library every Tuesday for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. The library encourages patrons to talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special because parking is free!

History @ Monument
The next edition of the History@Monument series, a monthly Kansas City history event held at Ilus Davis Park, will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 23. Join The Native Sons and Daughters of Greater Kansas City, Inc. for free hamburgers, hot dogs, ice cream and history. The August 23 program is called ‘The History of Kansas City Parks and Recreations Department: Past, Present, & Future,’ and features former Parks Commissioners Anita Gorman, Ollie Gates and Carl DiCapo.
