Voter registration deadline – July 11, 2018
The deadline to register to vote in the August 7, 2018 Missouri primary election is July 11, 2018. Missouri voter registration sites include the Kansas City Election Board office (Union State, Lower Level B), all Kansas City, Missouri library locations and all Mid-Continent Library locations.

 

KC No Violence Alliance community meeting
The Kansas City No Violence Alliance (KC NoVA) invites Northeast residents for a community conversation on Monday, July 11, from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Milestone Youth Center (3417 E. 12th St., KCMO 64127) to discuss NoVA’s enforcement results and resources provided in the Northeast as a result of targeted efforts in the area over the past months. Light refreshments will be served.

 

Lucile H. Bluford: Her National Closeup
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host a special presentation about Lucile Bluford on Wednesday, July 11, beginning at 6 p.m.
Woven as she is into the history of Kansas City, Lucile H. Bluford is scarcely known outside Missouri and Kansas. Sheila Brooks is out to change that, examining Bluford’s life and pioneering work in a new book, Lucile H. Bluford and the Kansas City Call: Activist Voice for Social Justice.
The Kansas City-born Brooks is a former television reporter, anchor, news director, and documentary producer who founded and heads the Washington, D.C.-based SRB Communications. She discusses the book—co-authored with Howard University’s Clint C. Wilson II—which recounts Bluford’s fight for admission into the University of Missouri’s graduate journalism program and assesses her dual role as a journalist and advocate for the women’s and civil rights movements.

 

Thursday, July 12

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Drop in tech coach
The Northeast branch of the Kansas City Public Library will bring in a tech coach to assist the public on Thursday, July 12 from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Get answers to questions about Microsoft Word and Excel; the internet; email, formatting a resume and online applications; syncing your smart phone, and so much more.

 

Friday, July 13

Teddy Bear Picnic KC
Due to ongoing construction, this year’s annual Teddy Bear Picnic will be moving from the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) to Roanoke Park (3601 Roanoke) on Friday, July 13, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Admission is free for this events, and attendees are invitied to pack a picnic, bring a blanket, and grab your favorite teddy bear(s) for an afternoon of fun in the park with music, games, crafts and more. No pets are allowed. Goody bags will be distributed to the first 200 kids who arrive. Registration is required for this popular event. To do so, go to kcparks.org/event/teddy-bear-picnic-2018.

 

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, July 13, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

Saturday, July 14

 

Della Lamb youth football camp
Della Lamb Community Services will host a youth football camp for area youth between the ages of 5 to 14 on Saturday, July 14, from 9 a.m. until noon on the North Kansas City High School field (620 E. 23rd St, North Kansas City). Registration begins at 8 a.m. The camp, which will include fitness activities and skill development drills, will be led by coaches at North Kansas City High School in collaboration with Della Lamb volunteer football coaches. The cost to attend is $5, which also includes a lunch. Attendees are invited to pre-register at Della Lamb (500 Woodland) or on-site at 8 a.m. on the day of the event.

 

Tour the historic Central Library
The next opportunity to tour the historic Central Library is on Saturday, July 14, from 11 a.m. until noon. Experience a guided, beyond-the-bookshelves tour of the Central Library’s unique spaces and rich history.

Summer Food Rocks at Sycamore Groves
Sycamore Groves Apartments (2920 E. 17th St.) is feeding children and teens this summer (ages 1-18) as part of its Summer Food Rocks free summer meal program. From June 3 through August 4, Sycamore Groves will be offering free breakfast (9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.) and lunch (12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.), Monday through Friday. Story time at Central Library
Come out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Tuesday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for story time. Join the library every Tuesday for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. The library encourages patrons to talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special because parking is free!
