RISE Volunteer Orientation
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host a RISE Volunteer Orientation on Wednesday, June 13, from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. Interested in volunteering for Refugee & Immigrant Services & Empowerment (RISE)? Attend this orientation class at the Central Library branch by RSVP’ing to rise@kclibrary.org. Parking in the Libary’s garage is free with validation.

Art in the Park lunchtime concert
The Art in the Park lunchtime concert series continues on Wednesday, June 13, with a performance by the John Gilmore Trio from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. at West Terrace Park (10th & Jefferson). The John Gilmore Trio pulls its influences from across the jazz and fusion spectrums to create a unique lyrical and textural experience. Comprised of drums, bass, and saxophone, the open sound leaves plenty of room for experimentation, while providing an enjoyable ambiance for the listener. Bring a chair and your lunch. This performance is free and open to the public.

 

Thursday, June 14

Coffee at McDonald’s
The Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the McDonald’s location at 5347 Independence Avenue to introduce new self-order kiosks on Thursday, June 14, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. McDonald’s invites attendees to enjoy a complimentary coffee while you complete your first order at one of the new kiosks.

2018 National Flag Day and flag retirement
In observance of Flag Day on June 14, Kansas City residents are invited to a flag retirement ceremony at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington Square Park. Patriotic music will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the retirement ceremony starting at 10 a.m. Bring your tired, your old, your tattered and faded flags to be officially retired. Captain Jamie A. Fraser-Loria of the United States Navy will serve as the guest speaker at the event.

Prospect Plaza Master Plan meeting
A meeting about the future of Prospect Plaza Park (12th and Prospect) will be held on Thursday, June 14, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Gregg/Klice Community Center (1600 John Buck O’Neil Way). At the public meeting, attendees will review the concepts for the Prospect Plaza Park master plan and offer feedback about the proposed improvements.

 

Friday, June 15 

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, June 15, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

Mr. Kneel: Hip Hop for Families
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a family-friendly hip hop class on Friday, June 15, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Mr Kneel is Neil McIntyre, an award winning Hip Hop musician and educator. His work at Warren Village in Denver, Colorado, a very special inner-city school, has led to a new kind of family music: “Golden Era Hip Hop” music that parents will love as much as their kid, if not more.

 

Saturday, June 16

3rd Annual Art INN the Garden
The 3rd Annual Art INN the Garden event will be help on Saturday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Inn at 425 (425 Gladstone Blvd., KCMO 64124). Twelve artists with connections to Northeast Arts KC will showcase work, which will include photgraphy, painting, ceramics, pottery, RAKU, jewlery, mixed media, note cards, and sculpture. Parking will be available on Gladstone Blvd.

Monday, June 18

Indian Mound Neighborhood Meeting
The Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Monday, June 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Northeast Public Library (6000 Wilson Ave.)

Summer Food Rocks at Sycamore Groves
Sycamore Groves Apartments (2920 E. 17th St.) is feeding children and teens this summer (ages 1-18) as part of its Summer Food Rocks free summer meal program. From June 3 through August 4, Sycamore Groves will be offering free breakfast (9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.) and lunch (12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.), Monday through Friday. Parks Board Meeting
The next meeting of the Parks Board will on Tuesday, June 19, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the KC Parks Administration building (4600 East 63rd Street Trafficway). The Board of Parks and Recreation holds public meetings twice a month on Tuesday at the Parks and Recreation Department headquarters. All meetings start at 2 p.m. and are open to the public.
