Coffee and Conversations
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library (14 W. 10th St.) will host the public for coffee and conversations on Wednesday, April 18, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. For this event, the library invites Kansas City residents experiencing homelessness – and patrons interested in social issues – are invited to join library staff for coffee, pastries, and conversation. This week’s featured guest is Rev. Michael Liimatta of Footprints, Inc.

 

Substance abuse recovery
A substance abuse recovery meeting will take place at 7 p.m. every Wednesday at New Beginning Apostolic Church. Contact Frederick Wilson (816-786-1981) for more information.

Dedication of Native Sons and Daughters monument
The new monument at Ilus Davis Park (north of City Hall, between 9th and 11th Streets) will be dedicated on Thursday, April 19, beginning at 10 a.m. The event will be a celebration for the new monument honoring The Native Sons and Daughters of Greater Kansas City, Inc., an organization dedicated to the historic preservation of the unique and rich heritage of the greater Kansas City metropolitan area, both in Missouri and Kansas, through advocacy, education and restoration.

 

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Tech Coach Drop-in at Northeast Library
Stop by the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Thursday, April 19 from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. to speak with a technology coach. The coaches will help with whatever technology questions you have–from building a resume to building a website. No appointment necessary; patrons can use library computers or bring in their own device.

 

NEAT General meeting
The next general meeting of Northeast Alliance Together (NEAT) will be held on Thursday, April 19, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Northeast Public Library. Ana Ramirez, NEAT AmeriCorps VISTA, will present on engagement she did this winter of 197 Northeast High School Students and how that information can be used to reduce and prevent youth violence in the Northeast.

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, April 20, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

Story time at Northeast Library
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) invites the public to story time on Friday, April 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This event features stories, songs, crafts and more! The subject for this week’s story time is bugs!

 

Food Truck Friday at Union Cemetery
Head out to Union Cemetery (227 E. 28th Terr.) on April 20 from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. for Food Truck Friday. Come enjoy a tasty and affordable lunch in one of downtown’s peaceful park spaces.

 

 

Financial challenges for returning citizens
Money Smart Month continues at the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library (14 W. 10th St.) on Friday, April 20 with a program about the financial challenged facing citizens who are returning from incarceration. Many of these individuals have continued to incur debts while they have been away. How can we best understand the financial lives of these individuals? What kinds of financial problems do they have upon their return? Mr. Jacob Bosch of Metro Lutheran Ministries will discuss the financial burden incarceration leaves in its wake. This program will be held in the H&R Block Business and Career Center on the 3rd floor.

How to purchase property from the Land Bank event
The Landbank Board of Advisors is holding an event about purchasing Land Bank properties on Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Robert J. Mohart Center (3200 Wayne Avenue, KCMO). Come out and find out how you can purchase homes and land for pennies on the dollar. The City will have lenders on site to discuss renovation financing. Renovation financing can be used to finance renovations on a personal property as well as investment properties. Five years ago, the City’s land bank had over 1,000 properties in its inventory; today, it’s less than 200. Find out how you can own a home for less than you think.

Story time at Central Library
Come out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Tuesday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for story time. Join the library every Tuesday for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. The library encourages patrons to talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special because parking is free!
