Wednesday night rundown: managing stress and mastering relaxation at the Central Branch
Join the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library for four weeks of Mindfulness Meditation Workshops presented by UMKC’s Community Counseling & Assessment Services. Meet on the 3rd Floor in the Kauffman Grand Reading Room for sessions on Wednesdays until November 8. Participants can attend one session or as many as they would like.

Donuts with Dunn at Kansas City Museum – November 8
Stop by the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) carriage house on Wednesday, November 8 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for a project update with representatives from J.E. Dunn. Attendees will get an opportunity to learn about the construction schedule, as well as project logisitcs and what to expect when construction starts in November.

 

Thursday, November 9

 

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Community meeting on violence
The Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association and KCPD East Patrol have organized a meeting about the ongoing violence in the neighborhood on Thursday, November 9 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church’s St. Joseph’s Hall. East Patrol Cpt. Ryan Mills will guide discussion, and he will be joined by several other East Patrol officers.

 

Friday, November 10

 

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, November 10, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

Veterans Day weekend events at WWI Museum
Veterans receive free admission to the National World War I museum during Veterans Day weekend (November 10-12), and the general public can get into the museum for half-price. In addition to a free Veterans Day Ceremony on Sat., Nov. 11 (Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II and Mayor Sly James expected to speak), the Museum will feature several free events and activities Friday through Sunday, including:
– a Vietnam era Bell UH-1 Iroquois “Huey” Helicopter will be on display.
– Hope 22: Dark to Light Photography Exhibit — a Kansas City photography project raising awareness about veterans’ suicide epidemic. The exhibit will feature photos and stories of 22 veterans (the project’s name stems from a Veterans Affairs report indicating that, on average, 22 veterans are killed by suicide every day).
-Find Your World War I Connection: Museum visitors will have access to research stations featuring Fold3.com, Ancestry.com, the Museum’s online collections database, records from the American Battlefield Monuments Commission, and the National Archives to help individuals find their World War I connection. (Friday-Sunday, Nov. 10-12).

 

Saturday, November 11

 

Suiting Up: Tailored Menswear in KC, 1900-2017
The Kansas City Museum at the Historic Garment District Museum (800 Broadway) has opened a new exhibit focusing on historical menswear. The Suiting Up: Tailored Menswear in Kansas City, 1900-2017 exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Wednesdays through Saturdays until February 24. The exhibit explores the history and evolution of tailored menswear in Kansas City from the 20th century to the present, and highlights some of Kansas City’s gentlemen of style throughout the last century. The cost to view the special exhibit is $5.

 

Show Me KC Schools – City School Fair
Kansas City’s only K-12 school fair will be held on Saturday, November 11, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Central Library Branch (14 W. 10th, KCMO 64105), courtesy of Show Me KC Schools. This school choice event will feature over 50 district, charter, private and parochial schools serving families within KCPS boundaries. It will also include face painting, puppetry, balloon artists, musical performances and free food.

 

Monday, November 13

 

Lykins Neighborhood meeting
The next Lykins Neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, November 13, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 3704 E. 12th St. Join Lykins neighbors as they review crime and grime, organize neighborhood cleanups, and focus on creating a better community. Other neighborhoods in Historic Northeast are more than welcome to join.

 

Stay strong, stay healthy
Start on the road to better health with Stay Strong, Stay Healthy, an 8-week strength training program at the North-East Public Library being offered by MU Extension. These simple, strength-building exercises will improve balance, health and state of mind. This program is designed for adults over age 60, and it began on October 30. Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association meeting
The Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 14, from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences,1750 Independence Avenue.

 

Graphic Novel Book Club
Head out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library for story time on Tuesday, November 14, from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Join the library each Tuesday on the Children’s floor for stories, crafts and a lot of imagination. Graphic novel fans (ages 7-15) enjoy meeting up with each other to talk about books, as well as to get first hand illustrative instruction on how to create, design and illustrate your own comics. Parking is free.
