Wednesday night rundown: managing stress and mastering relaxation at the Central Branch
Join the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library for four weeks of Mindfulness Meditation Workshops presented by UMKC’s Community Counseling & Assessment Services. Meet on the 3rd Floor in the Kauffman Grand Reading Room for sessions on Wednesdays until November 8. Participants can attend one session or as many as they would like.

Substance abuse recovery

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Friday, October 27 

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, October 27, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

Frontier Schools to celebrate opening of new gym
On Friday, October 27, Frontier Schools (1575 Universal Ave., KCMO) will celebrate the grand opening of it’s new gymnasium beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event will include opening remarks from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the architecture team. A Light breakfast will be served.

 

Saturday, October 28

Cliff Hanger 5K/8K Run
Come out to Cliff Drive on Saturday, October 28 beginning at 9 a.m. to watch the annual Cliff Hanger run. Cliff Drive offers a beautiful wooded route for runners and walkers in distances of both 5K and 8K. Experience the Historic Northeast with its rich mix of cultures, stately mansions along Gladstone Boulevard including the Kansas City Museum, and its historic neighborhoods. The race will start and finish on Kansas City University’s campus. The university is serving as the naming sponsor and host site of the event.

 

Suiting Up: Tailored Menswear in KC, 1900-2017
The Kansas City Museum at the Historic Garment District Museum (800 Broadway) has opened a new exhibit focusing on historical menswear. The Suiting Up: Tailored Menswear in Kansas City, 1900-2017 exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Wednesdays through Saturdays until February 24. The exhibit explores the history and evolution of tailored menswear in Kansas City from the 20th century to the present, and highlights some of Kansas City’s gentlemen of style throughout the last century. The cost to view the special exhibit is $5.

 

Monday, October 30

Jump-start your ‘G’ tree at the library
Join the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd) on Monday, October 30 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for an introduction to genealogy. Jump-start your “G” Tree-Genealogy Speaking! will be a workshop to help direct beginners and people who have a general idea of what they want to search for regarding their family tree. There will be a few laptops available as well as handouts to track and organize research. This class will continue on Mondays until Nov. 27.

 

Stay strong, stay healthy
Start on the road to better health with Stay Strong, Stay Healthy, an 8-week strength training program at the North-East Public Library being offered by MU Extension. These simple, strength-building exercises will improve balance, health and state of mind. This program is designed for adults over age 60, and it begins October 30. Tuesday, October 31

Garrison Community Center costume party
Come to Garrison Community on Tuesday, October 31 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a Halloween costume party. This event is for kids to enjoy games, face-painting, mask making and other arts and craft activities. Wear your costume, and compete in the center’s Halloween costume contest! Treats will include popcorn and cotton candy.

 

24th Annual Scare-it Halloween event
Join the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association on Tuesday, October 31 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the 24th annual Scare-it Halloween event. Join the Scarritt neighborhood for five blocks of car-free trick-or-treating; a pop-up haunted house, off track toddler train, KC Ghostbusters with their Superhero friends, and much more. The evening of free entertainment is brought to you by the neighborhood association in partnership with the Kansas City Museum, Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund (NTDF), KC Parks, KC Ghostbusters, Scott Rex Hobart, Eleos Coffee and many Scarritt volunteers.

 

Graphic Novel Book Club
Head out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library for story time on Tuesday, October 31, from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Join the library each Tuesday on the Children’s floor for stories, crafts and a lot of imagination. Graphic novel fans (ages 7-15) enjoy meeting up with each other to talk about books, as well as to get first hand illustrative instruction on how to create, design and illustrate your own comics. Parking is free.

The next meeting of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, November 6, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone).

 

Election Day on November 7
Don’t forget that Kansas City, Missouri will hold an election on Tuesday, November 7 to decide whether or not to authorize construction of a new single terminal at Kansas City International Airport. The City has selected Edgemoor as the designer, builder, and financier of the new terminal, but the plan must still be approved by voters. Remember to make your voice heard.
