Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

KCMO 5-year budget meeting
Head out to the KCMO Health Department multipurpose room (2400 Troost Ave.) on Thursday, October 19, from noon to 2 p.m. to participate in a public input session regarding the citywide priorities that will serve as critical guidelines for the next five years. Participants will break into focus groups to discuss their goals and visions for the City’s future. They’ll also be able to see how proposed objectives are prioritized as well as help create policy and direction for the City by working with other residents to build and balance the budget. Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, October 20, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

Boy Scout Troop 80’s annual chili dinner
Boy Scout Troop 80 will host its annual chili dinner on Friday, October 20, from noon to 7 p.m. at Holy Rosary’s Scalabrini Hall (910 Pacific, KCMO). The cost for adults is $6, while children can eat for $3. Price includes chili, salad, dessert, and a drink.

 

Knights of Columbus free movie night
The Knights of Columbus Cardinal Glennon Council #4613 will host its next free movie night on Friday, October 20 at St. Anthony’s St. Joseph Hall (3208 Lexington). Doors will open at 6 p.m., and a screening of Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein will be shown at 7 p.m. Hot dogs, popcorn, snacks, pop & water will be available for sale.

Northeast’s Fall Clean-up
Northeast’s Fall Cleanup is happening on Oct. 21 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The clean-up, organied by Northeast Alliance Together, will occur at Budd and Concourse Parks. There will be one truck for brush and two trucks for trash at each of the parks, as well as a trailer for waste tires (courtesy of ABC tires) at Concourse Park. Suiting Up: Tailored Menswear in KC, 1900-2017
The Kansas City Museum at the Historic Garment District Museum (800 Broadway) is opening a new exhibit focusing on historical menswear in Kansas City on Saturday, October 21, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Suiting Up: Tailored Menswear in Kansas City, 1900-2017 is an exhibition that explores the history and evolution of tailored menswear in Kansas City from the 20th century to the present, and highlights some of Kansas City’s gentlemen of style throughout the last century. The cost to view the special exhibit is $5.

Dia de los Muertos at Kansas City Museum
Head out to the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) on Sunday, October 22 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for the annual Dia de los Muertos celebration. Discover the history and cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos while enjoying live music by Pablo Sanhueza’s Latin Quintet, face panting, arts and crafts, and much more. This program is presented in partnership with Mattie Rhodes Center and the Cliff Drive Corridor Management Committee. It’s free to attend, and all ages are welcome. Bring a picnic and enjoy the park.

The North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library invites the public to the library on Monday, October 23 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for an opportunity to brush up on the English language. Learn basic vocabulary, grammar, and usage. Gain confidence in using English in your daily life.

Graphic Novel Book Club
Head out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library for story time on Tuesday, October 24, from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Join the library each Tuesday on the Children’s floor for stories, crafts and a lot of imagination. Graphic novel fans (ages 7-15) enjoy meeting up with each other to talk about books, as well as to get first hand illustrative instruction on how to create, design and illustrate your own comics. Parking is free.

Frontier Schools to celebrate opening of new gym
On Friday, October 27, Frontier Schools (1575 Universal Ave., KCMO) will celebrate the grand opening of it’s new gymnasium beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event will include opening remarks from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the architecture team. A Light breakfast will be served.

 

Stay strong, stay healthy
Start on the road to better health with Stay Strong, Stay Healthy, an 8-week strength training program at the North-East Public Library being offered by MU Extension. These simple, strength-building exercises will improve balance, health and state of mind. This program is designed for adults over age 60, and it begins October 30.
