Kansas City Museum at Garment Museum

The Kansas City Museum’s new space at the Historic Garment Museum (800 Broadway) is now open. The KCMO Historic Garment District provides 3,300 square feet for exhibitions, programs, and events, and it is adjacent to Garment District Place Park. The Kansas City Museum at the Historic Garment District (KCM@HGD) will offer special exhibitions that display historical items from the Kansas City Museum’s collections and also present contemporary works by local fashion designers, entrepreneurs, and artists. General Admission to the Historic Garment District Museum is free. Special Exhibition Admission to the Kansas City Museum at the Historic Garment District (KCM@HGD) is $5 per person and free for children 12 and under.

 Services for Dick Seidelman

There will be a Celebration of Life for Richard “Dick” Seidelman on Thursday, August 31 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the old St. Stephens School gymnasium (1001 Bennington Avenue, KCMO 64126). Please park in between the school and Our Lady of Peace Church. Come meet Richard’s brother, nephew and other family members and all the friends and children he has established a relationship with in the community. Join in for a potluck dinner, to share stories of Seidelman’s heroic life and to celebrate memories.

 

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic

The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Northeast Farmer’s Market

The next Northeast Farmer’s Market will be on Thursday, August 31, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 3001 Independence Avenue. Items to be included at the market are vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and more. Live music and a dedicated kids activity tent are also featured. The market also participates in the Double Up Food Bucks KC program. This allows customers receiving SNAP benefits to double their EBT/SNAP dollars to purchase more fruits and vegetables (up to $25/week). Chair Fitness

The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, September 1, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

Knights of Columbus dinner/bingo

The Knights of Columbus Cardinal Glennon Council #4613 will hosts its next dinner and bingo night on Friday, September 1, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m at St. Anthony’s St. Joseph Hall (3208 Lexington). A bratwurst dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; salad and dessert will be included for $8. Cost for the meal is only $5 if you substitute a hot dog. Bingo follows from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Additional drinks will be sold for $1.

Union Station’s PNC Kidfest

Union Station will host PNC Kidfest on Saturday, September 2, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. PNC Kidfest is a one-of-a-kind, family-friendly day full of science play geared toward early childhood learning. Experience the “Action, Re-Action” of science through fun science activities, hands-on demos and workshops. This event also features free Planetarium shows. Union Station members can attend this event for free, and special pricing is available for children under the age of 12.

Stop by the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Sunday, September 3, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for the next meeting of the North-East Book Club. Come to the North-East Book group each month to share your passion for books and join in on riveting book discussions. This month the library will be kicking off “The Big Read” with a discussion of “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien.This event is suitable for the entire family.

Graphic novel fans (ages 7-15) enjoy meeting up with each other to talk about books, as well as to get first hand illustrative instruction on how to create, design and illustrate your own comics.
