Coffee & Conversation at the Library
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host the next edition of Coffee & Conversation on Wednesday, July 19, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The Kansas City Public Library invites individuals experiencing homelessness and customers interested in social issues to join library staff for coffee, pastries and conversation on topics related to social inclusion, with a focus on issues we all have in common. This program is open to any and all library customers regardless of housing status. We meet on the 3rd floor.

 

KCPS enrollment fairs
Kansas City Public Schools will be hosting enrollment fairs for parents and guardians to easily enroll their children in neighborhood schools on Wednesday, July 19 and Thursday, July 20 at Northeast Middle School. On Wednesday, the enrollment fair will run from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. On Thursday, the fair will run from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Students must be enrolled by July 22 in order to guarantee transportation for the 2017-2018 school year.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Blue Valley Neighborhood Association Meeting
The Blue Valley neighborhood association will meet on Thursday, July 20, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Guadalupe Center (1512 Van Brunt).

 

Northeast Farmer’s Market
The next Northeast Farmer’s Market will be on Thursday, July 20, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 3001 Independence Avenue. Items to be included at the market are vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and more. Live music and a dedicated kids activity tent are also featured. The market also participates in the Double Up Food Bucks KC program. This allows customers receiving SNAP benefits to double their EBT/SNAP dollars to purchase more fruits and vegetables (up to $25/week). Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, July 21, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

Brian Wendling at the North-East Library
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host International Jugglers Association team champion Brian Wendling on Friday, July 21, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Wendling turns his juggling skills and audience antics into high-energy fun! This is a lively family-friendly show suitable for all ages.

 

 

Saturday, July 22

 

Community Days at Budd Park
Come out to Budd Park on Saturday, July 22 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. for a free neighborhood pool party. Kansas City Parks and Recreation will open the Budd Park pool, and community leaders will provide games, hot dogs, beverages, music, and fun for the whole family.

 

Showing of Witness
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host a screening of director Peter Weir’s Witness on Saturday, July 22, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Despite six Oscar nominations, Weir remains one of his generation’s most underappreciated directors. As such, the library will screen five of the 72-year-old Australian auteur’s best films in July. The final screening will be of Fearless on July 29.

Kansas City’s Big Picnic 2017
Come out to The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art’s Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park and Theis Park (Between Oak and Rockhill on Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd) on Sunday, July 23, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. for Kansas City’s Big Picnic 2017. This year’s picnic celebrates the 125th anniversary of KC Parks & Rec, National Parks & Recreation month, and the worldwide commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the death of renowned sculptor Auguste Rodin. Enjoy art activities, live music, food trucks, and games throughout the Big Picnic. Pack your own picnic or grab dinner from an on-site food truck! Rain or shine; no grills, no stakes, no tenting.

Note: Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd. from Oak Street to Rockhill Road will be closed for the Big Picnic from 2-9 p.m.

Kids’ Cafe
The North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library invites kids to the library on Monday, July 24 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. for Kids’ Cafe, where young children and teens alike can enjoy a healthy snack. This event is for youth 18 and under. The Kids’ Cafe is held every week during the summer months, from Monday-Thursday.

 

Sheffield Neighborhood Association Meeting
The next meeting of the Sheffield Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, July 24, beginning at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church (1029 Bennington).

 

 

Tuesday, July 25

 

Parks Board Meeting
The next meeting of the Parks Board will on Tuesday, July 25, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the KC Parks Administration building (4600 East 63rd Street Trafficway). The Board of Parks and Recreation holds public meetings twice a month on Tuesday at the Parks and Recreation Department headquarters. All meetings start at 2 p.m. and are open to the public.

Mattie Rhodes Center Back to School Rally
Mattie Rhodes Center will host a Back to School Rally on Thursday, August 3, from 4 pm until 7 pm at the Northeast location (148 N. Topping Ave.). The event will include a limited number of free school supplies, a school uniform raffle, free immunizations and health screenings, sign-ups for the center’s Soccer for Success program, as well as a bounce house and games for kids. The rally will also be an opportunity to learn more about Mattie Rhodes Center programs and other community resources.

 

KCPS Summerfest
Kansas City Public Schools will host its annual Summerfest event on Saturday, July 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at KCPS Board of Education Park (located on the northeast corner of 29th Street and Troost Avenue). Summerfest is an opportunity for school children of all ages to celebrate and get ready for the arrival of the new school year. This event will feature live entertainment, athletic competitions, educational games and free food. In preparation for school, students will have the opportunity to receive a free backpack, school supplies, athletic physicals and immunizations. Summerfest is open to the community and will include a variety of community resources and children’s activities.
