Thursday, April 6
Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

North-East Library ESL classes
Come learn and practice English at the North-East Public Library Branch on Monday’s and Thursday’s from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Let the library help you adjust to U.S. culture by helping speaking, writing, and reading English. For more information, contact the library at (816) 701-3485.

National Centennial at WWI Memorial
On Thursday, April 6, a centennial commemoration of the United States’ entry into World War I is being held at the National World War I Museum in Penn Valley Park beginning at 9:00 a.m. The ceremony is a multi-media production that will detail America’s decision to enter the war. Artistic Director Ed Bilous has adapted historic images and music of the period into a 90-minute mixture of live performance and film to be broadcast on giant screens at the museum. Flyovers by U.S. aircraft and Patrouille de France, the aerobatic demonstration team of the French Air Force, will add color and high-flying inspiration to this ceremony, which will also feature the U.S. First Infantry Division Band and Color Guard, along with the Native American Color Guard, Army and Air Force legacy units that served during World War I and special video presentations and musical performances from the period.

 

Friday, April 7
Knights of Columbus dinner
Join the Knights of Columbus Council #4613 for a fish fry dinner and bingo night on the evening of Friday April 7 at St. Anthony’s (3208 Lexington KCMO 64124). Dinner will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., while bingo will run from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  Dinner includes catfish or codfish, shrimp, fries and coleslaw. The cost to attend is $10 for adults, or $6 for children under the age of 12. Coffee is included; drinks and desserts will be available for $1 apiece.

 

Saturday, April 8
Miss Shizuoka: Restored at Reunited – at KC Museum
The Kansas City Museum has welcomed home Miss Shizuoka, who was on a year-long loan from January to December 2016 to the prefecture of Shizuoka in Japan. Miss Shizuoka (also known as Fujiyama Mihoko) is a Japanese Friendship Doll; she is one of 58 dolls sent from Japan to the United States in 1927 as part of a doll exchange between the United States and Japan. Shizuoka is a prefecture of Japan and is home to Mt. Fuji. In 2016, over 30,000 people in Japan visited Miss Shizuoka for her homecoming. While in Japan, Miss Shizuoka was restored and received a new kimono and accouterments. Miss Shizuoka will be on display in Corinthian Hall in her new kimono and with her new accouterments until April 29.

Citizen Prep at North-East Public Library
Take part in a citizen prep course held on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library. The class will continue through April 8. Come to the library to learn the basic US history information, review USCIS’s 100 Questions, and practice the citizenship exam/interview in this FREE course!! Advanced English skills preferred. All you need is a notebook and a pen.
 

 

Sunday, April 9
Scarritt Renaissance seeking volunteers for KaBOOM! build
The Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association is now seeking volunteers to help with the construction of a KaBOOM! playground on Saturday, April 22, beginning at 9:00 a.m. No matter your skill level, the neighborhood can use your help. This playground is for children 2-5 years of age, which will provide them a safer alternative to previously-built playground for 5-12 year old children. If you have construction skills, if you have the ability to carry parts to those building the equipment, or if you are willing to help with food pick up,the neighborhood can use your help. If you have hand tools, mobile table/mitre saws, heavy duty long extension cords, Scarritt leaders ask that you bring them and be sure they are labeled with your name. Monday, April 10
Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Monday, April 10 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

Lykins Neighborhood meeting
The next Lykins Neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, April 10, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 3704 E. 12th St. Join Lykins neighbors as they review crime and grime, organize neighborhood cleanups, and focus on creating a better community. Other neighborhoods in Historic Northeast are more than welcome to join.

 

Tuesday, April 11
Story time at Central Library
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, April 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. Library guests talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special. Parking is free!

Fountain Day at The Concourse
Come out to The Concourse in Kessler Park (Benton and St. John) on Wednesday, April 12, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to celebrate the official start of 2017 fountain season with the City’s Parks and Recreation department. Join the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners, the City of Fountains Foundation, and musical guest Grand Marquis for this annual celebration of one of Kansas City’s most historic parks. Food trucks and lawn games will also be available during this season-opening event.

Blue Valley Neighborhood Association Meeting
The Blue Valley neighborhood association will meet on Thursday, April 20, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Guadalupe Center (1512 Van Brunt).

Indian Mound Neighborhood Meeting
