Kansas City Museum open house
The Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) will host an open house to inform the public about the architectural design, the museum planning process, and the construction timeline for the renovation and restoration of Corinthian Hall on Wednesday, March 29, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. View the Museum’s Visitor Experience Plan, speak with project team members, and review floor plans during this informational meeting.

Substance abuse recovery
A substance abuse recovery meeting will take place at 7 p.m. every Wednesday at New Beginning Apostolic Church. Contact Frederick Wilson (816-786-1981) for more information.

Free Tax Prep at Central Library
Come out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Wednesday, March 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for free tax prep courtesy of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). This service is available to individuals making $54,000 per year or less. Help is available on a walk-in basis only, and time slots fill up quickly. Library staff are not tax experts. Please bring the following items: Proof of identification (photo ID), Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, birth dates of spouse and dependents, wage and earnings statements (W-2), Interest and dividend statements from bank, All 1095 Forms, last year’s state and federal returns, direct deposit and banking information, proof of daycare expenses with provider name, and copies of income transcripts from the IRS and the state.

 

Thursday, March 30
Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

North-East Library ESL classes
Come learn and practice English at the North-East Public Library Branch on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Let the library help you adjust to U.S. culture by helping speak, write and read English. For more information, contact the library at (816) 701-3485.

 

Friday, March 31
Knights of Columbus dinner
Join the Knights of Columbus Council #4613 for a fish fry dinner and bingo night on the evening of Friday March 31 at St. Anthony’s (3208 Lexington KCMO 64124). Dinner will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., while bingo will run from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  Dinner includes catfish or codfish, shrimp, fries and coleslaw. The cost to attend is $10 for adults, or $6 for children under the age of 12. Coffee is included; drinks and desserts will be available for $1 apiece.

KC STEM FEST at Union Station
The first annual KC STEM FEST will take place on Friday, March 31, 2017 from 12:15pm to 2:45pm at Union Station in the Sprint Festival Plaza. Wayne Carter, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute (KCALSI) will serve as keynote speaker during the opening ceremony beginning at 12:15 p.m. This event is admission-free and open to the public. This family-friendly KC STEM celebration aims to get kids and the community excited about STEM careers and the future. STEM FEST projects include a Solar Car, Rocketry , Robotics , 3D Printed Prosthetic Arm, a Hovercraft, and more.

 

Saturday, April 1
Citizen Prep at North-East Public Library
Take part in a citizen prep course held on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library. The class will continue through April 8. Come to the library to learn the basic US history information, review USCIS’s 100 Questions, and practice the citizenship exam/interview in this FREE course!! Advanced English skills preferred. All you need is a notebook and a pen.

Money Smart Day
The 9th annual Money Smart Day, brought to you by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, is Saturday, April 1, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Central Library Branch. Choose from a dozen free educational sessions covering a variety of personal finance topics, including: home financing 101, understanding credit, avoiding financial traps and more. Miss Shizuoka: Restored at Reunited – at KC Museum
Beginning on April 1, The Kansas City Museum welcomes home Miss Shizuoka, who was on a year-long loan from January to December 2016 to the prefecture of Shizuoka in Japan. Miss Shizuoka (also known as Fujiyama Mihoko) is a Japanese Friendship Doll; she is one of 58 dolls sent from Japan to the United States in 1927 as part of a doll exchange between the United States and Japan. Shizuoka is a prefecture of Japan and is home to Mt. Fuji. In 2016, over 30,000 people in Japan visited Miss Shizuoka for her homecoming. While in Japan, Miss Shizuoka was restored and received a new kimono and accouterments. Miss Shizuoka will be on display in Corinthian Hall until April 29.

The next meeting of the North East Library Branch’s book club will be held on Sunday, April 2, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 6000 Wilson Rd. Share your passion for books and enjoy lively discussions with other adults.

Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Monday, April 3 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

Story time at Central Library
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, April 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. Library guests talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special. Parking is free!
