KC Museum’s KCFD history exhibit open until March 25
The Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) is still presenting In the Line of Duty: A History of the Kansas City, MO Fire Department from 1868-1968, an exhibition that explores stories of courage and dedication that comprise the heritage and development of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department (KCFD). From its humble beginnings in the late 1800s to international fame, and from technological triumphs to tragic losses, the KCFD has over 100 years of proud service to its community. The exhibit closes on March 25, but visitors are welcome to go on self-guided tours of the exhibit Wednesday through Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. each day.

Substance abuse recovery

Thursday, March 23
Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

North-East Library ESL classes
Come learn and practice English at the North-East Public Library Branch on Monday’s and Thursday’s from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Let the library help you adjust to U.S. culture by helping speaking, writing, and reading English. For more information, contact the library at (816) 701-3485.

 

Friday, March 24
Knights of Columbus dinner
Join the Knights of Columbus Council #4613 for a fish fry dinner and bingo night on the evening of Friday March 24 at St. Anthony’s (3208 Lexington KCMO 64124). Dinner will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., while bingo will run from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  Dinner includes catfish or codfish, shrimp, fries and coleslaw. The cost to attend is $10 for adults, or $6 for children under the age of 12. Coffee is included; drinks and desserts will be available for $1 apiece.

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, March 24, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

Saturday, March 25
Free Tax Prep at Central Library
Come out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Saturday, March 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for free tax prep courtesy of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). This service is available to individuals making $54,000 per year or less. Help is available on a walk-in basis only, and time slots fill up quickly. Library staff are not tax experts. Please bring the following items: Proof of identification (photo ID), Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, birth dates of spouse and dependents, wage and earnings statements (W-2), Interest and dividend statements from bank, All 1095 Forms, last year’s state and federal returns, direct deposit and banking information, proof of daycare expenses with provider name, and copies of income transcripts from the IRS and the state.

KCPD Chief Forte to visit Mattie Rhodes
KCPD Chief Darryl Forte will visit the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) on Saturday, March 25, beginning at 10:00 a.m. for a Historic Northeast community meeting. The community is invited to attend, and index cards will be passed out for community questions after the neighborhood presentations.

Citizen Prep at North-East Public Library
Take part in a citizen prep course held on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library. The class will continue through April 8. Come to the library to learn the basic US history information, review USCIS’s 100 Questions, and practice the citizenship exam/interview in this FREE course!! Advanced English skills preferred. All you need is a notebook and a pen.

 

Sunday, March 26
KCMO Parks and Rec 2017 shelter reservations
2017 Parks and Recreation shelter reservations have begun. Reservations can be made online or in person at the KC Parks District 3 office (6901 Elmwood Avenue), at the Loose Park Garden Center (5200  Pennsylvania), or at any of the city’s community centers. Shelters are available for rental from May 1 through October 31.  All reservations are for the entire day (9 a.m. to 10 p.m.). Monday, March 27
Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Monday, March 27 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

Sheffield Neighborhood Association Meeting
The next meeting of the Sheffield Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, March 27, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church (1029 Bennington).

 

Tuesday, March 28
Story time at Central Library
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, March 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. Library guests talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special. Parking is free!

Mayor Sly James – State of the City Address
The Mayor’s annual State of the City address will be held on Tuesday, March 28, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (4525 Oak). The event is free to attend, and will also be livestreamed on Channel 2, the Mayor’s Facebook page, and through kcmo.gov.

The Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) will host an open house to inform the public about the architectural design, the museum planning process, and the construction timeline for the renovation and restoration of Corinthian Hall on Wednesday, March 29, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. View the Museum’s Visitor Experience Plan, speak with project team members, and review floor plans during this informational meeting.

April 1 – Money Smart Day
The 9th annual Money Smart Day, brought to you by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, is Saturday, April 1, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Central Library Branch. Choose from a dozen free educational sessions covering a variety of personal finance topics, including: home financing 101, understanding credit, avoiding financial traps and more.
