KCMO Parks and Rec 2017 shelter reservations
2017 Parks and Recreation shelter reservations have begun. Reservations can be made online or in person at the KC Parks District 3 office (6901 Elmwood Avenue), at the Loose Park Garden Center (5200  Pennsylvania), or at any of the city’s community centers. Shelters are available for rental from May 1 through October 31.  All reservations are for the entire day (9 a.m. to 10 p.m.). Substance abuse recovery
A substance abuse recovery meeting will take place at 7 p.m. every Wednesday at New Beginning Apostolic Church. Contact Frederick Wilson (816-786-1981) for more information.

 

Thursday, March 16
Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Blue Valley Neighborhood Association Meeting
The Blue Valley neighborhood association will meet on Thursday, March 16, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Guadalupe Center (1512 Van Brunt).

North-East Library ESL classes
Come learn and practice English at the North-East Public Library Branch on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Let the library help you adjust to U.S. culture with help speaking, writing, and reading English. For more information, contact the library at (816) 701-3485.

 

Friday, March 17
Knights of Columbus dinner
Join the Knights of Columbus Council #4613 for a fish fry dinner and bingo night on the evening of Friday March 17 at St. Anthony’s (3208 Lexington KCMO 64124). Dinner will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., while bingo will run from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  The cost to attend is $10 for adults, or $6 for children under the age of 12. Coffee is included; drinks and desserts will be available for $1 apiece.

Dr. Joslyn retirement celebration
Dr. Elaine Joslyn is retiring at the end of the month of  March, and a retirement celebration will be held in her honor on Friday, March 17, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Independence Avenue CID office (2657 Independence Ave.). Stop by to congratulate Dr. Joslyn on her nearly 23 years providing medical care to the Northeast community. Dr. Joslyn is expected to offer a few words on her retirement at 6:00 p.m.
Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, March 17, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

Saturday, March 18
St. Joseph tables, March 18 and 19
Stop on by St. Anthony’s (3208 Lexington) on Saturday, March 18 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. for a viewing of the church’s St. Joseph Table. Then, after the 9:00 a.m. mass the following morning, stick around for the blessing of the table, a traditional Pasta Milanese meal, and to purchase your cannolis and cookies. Additionally, Holy Rosary (910 Pacific) will have their St. Joseph’s table open for viewing from 5:00- 8:00 p.m. on March 18, following 4:00 p.m. mass. Pasta will be served on March 19 from 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Citizen Prep at North-East Public Library
Take part in a citizen prep course held on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library. The class will continue through April 8. Come to the library to learn the basic US history information, review USCIS’s 100 Questions, and practice the citizenship exam/interview in this FREE course!! Advanced English skills preferred. All you need is a notebook and a pen.

 

Sunday, March 19
Indian Mound volunteer work day
The Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host a volunteer work day in its community garden (5415 St. John Ave.) on Sunday, March 19, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Renting a raised bed for 2017 costs $10.

Paseo Gateway call for artists
Through March 20, the Paseo Gateway Choice Neighborhood’s ‘Art on the Avenue’ project is seeking an artist to activate public spaces in the Northeast. The project will focus on the enhancement of utility boxes in the neighborhood. Artists are invited to integrate art into existing public utility boxes to beautify the urban landscape. Monday, March 20

Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Monday, March 20 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

Royale Inn demolition
The City of Kansas City, Missouri is scheduled to begin demolition of the vacant Royale Inn (600 Paseo) on Monday, March 20, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The demolition of the motel is expected to clear the way for the Paseo Gateway project to continue.

4th District community meeting at Kansas City Museum
Join 4th District Councilwomen Jolie Justus and Katheryn Shields on Monday, March 20, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Kansas City Museum for a 4th District community meeting with your elected representatives.

Indian Mound Neighborhood Meeting
Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Monday, March 20 at the North-East Public Library at 6:00 p.m.

 

Tuesday, March 21
21st Annual Cultures Without Borders art showcase
Head over to the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) through March 25, 2017 to see the 21st Annual Cultures Without Borders art showcase, put on in partnership between the museum and Northeast Arts KC. The regional, juried art show will be on display in Corinthian Hall’s salon room and viewable by the public Wednesdays-Saturdays, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Visit northeastartskc.org to see archives from past shows and to learn more about this event.

Story time at Central Library
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, March 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. Library guests talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special. Parking is free!

The Mayor’s annual State of the City address will be held on Tuesday, March 28, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (4525 Oak). The event is free to attend, and will also be livestreamed on Channel 2, the Mayor’s Facebook page, and through kcmo.gov.
