Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

From the Bottom Up: The Story of the Irish in KC
Join the Central Public Library Branch on Thursday, March 2 beginning at 6:30 p.m. for a history lesson about the Irish in Kansas City. Irish immigrants were the first large ethnic group to settle in Kansas City and literally helped carve out its skyline, cutting roads into the limestone bluffs at the edge of the Missouri River. Pat O’Neill, a fifth-generation Kansas Citian and champion of all things Irish, chronicled their history in From the Bottom Up: The Story of the Irish in Kansas City. In this presentation he discusses the book, focusing in particular on its illuminating account of the postcards received by immigrants in KC from their families across the Atlantic.

 

Friday, March 3
Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, March 3, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

Knights of Columbus dinner
Join the Knights of Columbus Council #4613 for a fish fry dinner and bingo night on the evening of Friday March 3 at St. Anthony’s (3208 Lexington KCMO 64124). Dinner will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., while bingo will run from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  The cost to attend is $10 for adults, or $6 for children under the age of 12. Coffee is included; drinks and desserts will be available for $1 apiece.

 

Saturday, March 4
Spring Into Action Youth Jam 2017
The public is invited to bring their children to the Milestone Center (3417 E. 12 St., KCMO) on Saturday, March 4 to participate in a day of fun and games with their peers. From 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., children from kindergarten to 5th grade are invited to the Children’s Session, where they can participate in activities including basketball, soccer, Stranger Danger, D.A.R.E. rapping, gardening, poetry, crafts, puppetry, beading, and card-making. From 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., kids from 6th grade through 11th grade are invited to participate in the teen session. The event – which is sponsored by Fishers of Men, Gods Love Ministries, GX International, ACTS Ministry, KC NoVA, Milestone Center, YWAM, KCPD, and His Name Ministries – will also include free walking tacos, popcorn, and more. Citizen Prep at North-East Public Library
Take part in a citizen prep course held on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library. The class will continue through April 8. Come to the library to learn the basic US history information, review USCIS’s 100 Questions, and practice the citizenship exam/interview in this FREE course. Advanced English skills preferred. All you need is a notebook and a pen.

21st Annual Culture Without Borders art showcase
Head over to the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) on Saturday, March 4 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. for a public opening and artist’s reception for the 21st Annual Culture Without Borders art showcase, put on in partnership between the museum and Northeast Arts KC. The regional, juried art show will be held in Corinthian Hall’s salon room, and the artwork will be on display through March 25. North-East Library Book Club
Come out to the North-East Public Library branch on Sunday, March 5 from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. for the next edition of the North-East Book Club. Come each month to share your passion for books and join in on riveting book discussions.

KCMO Parks and Rec 2017 shelter reservations
2017 Parks and Recreation shelter reservations have begun. Reservations can be made online or in person at the KC Parks District 3 office (6901 Elmwood Avenue), at the Loose Park Garden Center (5200  Pennsylvania), or at any of the city’s community centers. Shelters are available for rental from May 1 through October 31.  All reservations are for the entire day (9 a.m. to 10 p.m.). Monday, March 6
 Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Monday, March 6 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Meeting
The next meeting of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, March 6 at 6:30 pm at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone).

Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, March 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. Library guests talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special. Parking is Free!

Stop by the McDonald’s at 5347 Independence Ave. on Thursday, March 9, to support fundraising efforts at Garfield Elementary School. Between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on March 9, 20% of all orders at the location will be donated to Garfield Elementary’s Student Activity Fund.
