Literacy KC Volunteer Orientation
Learn about the causes, effects, and prevalence of functional illiteracy, and how volunteers can be part of the solution. Literacy Kansas City will host a volunteer orientation on Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. and on Jan. 19 at 9 a.m. at the American Red Cross Building, 211 W. Armour Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. Literacy Kansas City trains tutors to serve adults and older teens with free, one-on-one, confidential reading assistance throughout the greater metropolitan area; Northeast and midtown volunteers especially needed. Gardening class
Mattie Rhodes Center, 148 N. Topping Ave., Kansas City, Mo., will host a five-week gardening class at the Center beginning on Jan. 22. The weekly classes will be held every Tuesday at 6 p.m. and are free of charge. Receive training and support on how to develop a small vegetables market booth at a local farmer’s market. KCPS Community Meeting
Kansas City Public Schools will host several community meetings, including one in Historic Northeast. The Northeast meeting will be held at Gladstone Elementary, 335 N. Elmwood from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 29. Each meeting, sponsored by the Local Investment Commission (LINC), will include free childcare, a light meal and translation services in Spanish and Somali. Participants will work in small groups led by a KCPS Board of Education member to provide input regarding KCPS. Each meeting is identical and citizens may attend one or more. General information regarding other KCPS programs and initiatives will also be available.
