A school crossing guard on his way to work has died as a result of his injuries after being struck by a truck early Friday morning.

The man, James Suman of Kansas City, Mo., was crossing Van Brunt near 7th Street when he was struck. He was transported to a hospital where he later died.

The driver of the truck remained on the scene and was being questioned by police. Sources with the Kansas City School District noted that most of the crossing guards for KCPS are employed by a subcontractor, Securitas Security Company. Calls to Securitas’ human resources department were referred to their Chicago, Ill. office.

Suman was assigned to Gladstone Elementary School and worked the corner of St. John and Elmwood Avenue.
