Kansas City Museum at Garment Museum

The Kansas City Museum will open its new space at the Historic Garment Museum (800 Broadway) on Wednesday, August 23, at 10 a.m. The KCMO Historic Garment District provides 3,300 square feet for exhibitions, programs and events, and it is adjacent to Garment District Place Park. The Kansas City Museum at the Historic Garment District (KCM@HGD) will offer special exhibitions that display historical items from the Kansas City Museum’s collections and also present contemporary works by local fashion designers, entrepreneurs, and artists. General Admission to the Historic Garment District Museum is free. Special Exhibition Admission to the Kansas City Museum at the Historic Garment District (KCM@HGD) is $5 per person and free for children 12 and under.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic

The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Northeast Farmer’s Market

The next Northeast Farmer’s Market will be on Thursday, August 24, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 3001 Independence Avenue. Items to be included at the market are vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and more. Live music and a dedicated kids activity tent are also featured. The market also participates in the Double Up Food Bucks KC program. Chair Fitness

The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, August 25, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

Independence Avenue ART Wraps Celebration

Head to Independence Plaza Park (Independence and Brooklyn) on Saturday, August 26, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. for a celebration of the new art wraps on Independence Avenue. Northeast Arts KC and LISC will provide entertainment and activities for kids, and the event will also feature a walking tour of the new wrapped utility boxes on the Avenue. Mattie Rhodes Center will be decorating the park fences and organizing clay art, and Central Bank will be running Spin the Wheel games.  Scuola Vita Nuova Charter School (right next door) will also be involved, and will offer their gym if the weather does not cooperate.

The North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library invites the public to the library on Monday, August 28 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for an opportunity to brush up on the English language. Learn basic vocabulary, grammar, and usage. Gain confidence in using English in your daily life.

Graphic Novel Book Club

Head out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library for story time on Tuesday, August 29, from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Join the library each Tuesday on the Children’s floor for stories, crafts and a lot of imagination. Graphic novel fans (ages 7-15) enjoy meeting up with each other to talk about books, as well as to get first hand illustrative instruction on how to create, design and illustrate your own comics. Knights of Columbus dinner/bingo

The Knights of Columbus Cardinal Glennon Council #4613 will hosts its next dinner and bingo night on Friday, September 1, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m at St. Anthony’s St. Joseph Hall (3208 Lexington). A bratwurst dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; salad and dessert will be included for $8. Cost for the meal is only $5 if you substitute a hot dog. Bingo follows from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Additional drinks will be sold for $1.
