 Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic

The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Northeast Farmer’s Market

The next Northeast Farmer’s Market will be on Thursday, August 10, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 3001 Independence Avenue. Items to be included at the market are vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and more. Live music and a dedicated kids activity tent are also featured. The market also participates in the Double Up Food Bucks KC program. This allows customers receiving SNAP benefits to double their EBT/SNAP dollars to purchase more fruits and vegetables (up to $25/week). Chair Fitness

The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, August 11, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

Kansas City Museum free summer concert

The Kansas City Museum’s (3218 Gladstone) free summer concert series continues on Friday, August 11 with a performance from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. by The Phantastics. The Phantastics are a nine-member band from Kansas City specializing in tantalizing, genre-blending dance floor activators. Expect to hear Rock, Rap, Dance, Funk, Jazz, and Soul all incorporated into a seamless, winding river of music. As a special bonus for attendees, Joseph Wright, Operations Manager of the Warkoczewski Observatory at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and other members of the Astronomical Society of Kansas (ASKC) will be on hand for an evening of sky tours and discussion of the upcoming 2017 Great American Total Solar Eclipse.

Independence Plaza Park celebration 

Head out to Independence Plaza Park on Saturday, August 12 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. for the “It’s Our Park” celebration. The Independence Plaza Neighborhood Council has partnered with several non-profit organizations and area businesses to bring an end-of-summer celebration to Independence Plaza Park for the benefit of Historic Northeast families.

 

Sly’s Rock the Block

Join Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Sly James at the annual Sly’s Rock the Block event at Washington Square Park (Pershing and Grand) on Saturday, August 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free food will be provided to the first 1,500 people in attendance. This event is free to attend. Live, family-friendly entertainment will be provided.

English Class

The North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library invites the public to the library on Monday, August 14 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for an opportunity to brush up on the English language. Learn basic vocabulary, grammar, and usage. Gain confidence in using English in your daily life.

 

Lykins Neighborhood meeting

The next Lykins Neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, August 14, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 3704 E. 12th St. Join Lykins neighbors as they review crime and grime, organize neighborhood cleanups, and focus on creating a better community. Other neighborhoods in Historic Northeast are more than welcome to join.

Head out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library for story time on Tuesday, August 15, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Join every Tuesday for stories, songs and plenty of time for play.  During Story Time, parking is free.

Knights of Columbus free movie night

The Knights of Columbus Cardinal Glennon Council #4613 will hosts its next movie night on Friday, August 18, at St. Anthony’s St. Joseph Hall (3208 Lexington). The movie being screened will be Toy Story. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the movie will begin at 7 p.m. Popcorn, hot dogs, snacks, soda and water will be sold during the event.

The next meeting of the Sheffield Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, August 23, beginning at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church (1029 Bennington).
