 Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic

The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Northeast Farmer’s Market

The next Northeast Farmer’s Market will be on Thursday, August 3, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 3001 Independence Avenue. Items to be included at the market are vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and more. Live music and a dedicated kids activity tent are also featured. The market also participates in the Double Up Food Bucks KC program. Mattie Rhodes Center Back to School Rally

Mattie Rhodes Center will host a Back to School Rally on Thursday, August 3, from 4 pm until 7 pm at the Northeast location (148 N. Topping Ave.). The event will include a limited number of free school supplies, a school uniform raffle, free immunizations and health screenings, sign-ups for the center’s Soccer for Success program, as well as a bounce house and games for kids. The rally will also be an opportunity to learn more about Mattie Rhodes Center programs and other community resources.

KCMO’s sales tax holiday begins August 4

Local residents are encouraged to take advantage of the City’s three-day sales tax holiday that begins Friday, Aug. 4, and ends Sunday, Aug. 6. Shoppers who purchase certain items of clothing, shoes, school supplies and computers at KCMO stores will not have to pay any city sales tax. Some items will not be exempt from sales tax.

 

Chair Fitness

The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, August 4, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

Knights of Columbus Dinner/Bingo

The Knights of Columbus Cardinal Glennon Council #4613 will host a dinner and bingo night on Friday, August 4 at St. Anthony’s (3208 Lexington). Dinner of Oriental Teriyaki chicken and rice with vegetables will be served from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.; bingo will go from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Dinner will cost $7 for two skewers or $8 for three skewers,  with the rice and vegetables served on the side. Coffee is included; drinks and dessert available for $1 apiece.

KCPS Summerfest

Kansas City Public Schools will host its annual Summerfest event on Saturday, August 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at KCPS Board of Education Park (located on the northeast corner of 29th Street and Troost Avenue). Summerfest is an opportunity for school children of all ages to celebrate and get ready for the arrival of the new school year. This event will feature live entertainment, athletic competitions, educational games and free food. In preparation for school, students will have the opportunity to receive a free backpack, school supplies, athletic physicals and immunizations. Summerfest is open to the community and will include a variety of community resources and children’s activities.

North-East Book Club

Come out the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Sunday, July August 6 from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. for the next edition of the North-East Book Club. Share your passion for books and join in on riveting book discussions. This month’s book is “Lafayette in the Somewhat United States” by Sarah Vowell.

Kids’ Cafe

The North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library invites kids to the library on Monday, August 7 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. for Kids’ Cafe, where young children and teens alike can enjoy a healthy snack. This event is for youth 18 and under. The Kids’ Cafe is held every week during the summer months, from Monday-Thursday.

 

Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Meeting

The next meeting of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, August 7 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone).

Head out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library for story time on Tuesday, August 8, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Join every Tuesday for stories, songs and plenty of time for play.  During Story Time, parking is free.
