Kids’ Cafe
The North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library invites kids to the library on Wednesday, July 12 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. for Kids’ Cafe, where young children and teens alike can enjoy a healthy snack. This event is for youth 18 and under. The Kids’ Cafe is held every week during the summer months, from Monday-Thursday.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Build a Better World at Your Library
Join the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Thursday, July 13 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. for a fun kids craft activity. Families are invited to come create their own tiny town inside the library.

Northeast Farmer’s Market
The next Northeast Farmer’s Market will be on Thursday, July 13, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 3001 Independence Avenue. Items to be included at the market are vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and more. Live music and a dedicated kids activity tent are also featured. The market also participates in the Double Up Food Bucks KC program. Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, July 14 from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available; no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

KC Community Gardens Happy Hour
The Kansas City Community Gardens (6917 Kensington Ave, Kansas City, MO 64132) will host a Happy Hour in the Gardens event on Friday, July 14, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This event includes beer and wine, music by the Meatballs Ukulele Band, and food available for purchase from the Peaceful Pig Vegan BBQ food truck. Attendees can take a self-guided tour of KCCG’s Beanstalk Children’s Garden and learn more about the work the agency is doing to empower over 25,000 low-income families and community groups to grow their own healthy, affordable food. Tickets are $5, but there is no cost for monthly donors and children to attend.

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, July 14, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

Free summer concert at the Kansas City Museum: A Bat and Three Bears featuring Annie Ellicott
Stop by the Kansas City Museum on Friday, July 14 for the next show in the summer concert series. A Bat and Three Bears Featuring Annie Ellicott will be performing from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the Museum grounds. Annie Ellicott spins the great American song book into new gold with this all star cast: Mark Southerland, saxophone and horn sculptures; Jeff Harshbarger, bass; John Kizilarmut, drums and Alex Massa, Trumpet. Beautiful standards woven together with free jazz reveries, Annie and friends will show their mastery of both song and sound.

Showing of The Dead Poets Society
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host a screening of director Peter Weir’s The Dead Poets Society on Saturday, July 15, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Despite six Oscar nominations, Weir remains one of his generation’s most underappreciated directors. As such, the library will screen five of the 72-year-old Australian auteur’s best films in July. Remaining screening include Witness on July 22 and Fearless on July 29.

Indian Mound Neighborhood Meeting
The Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Monday, July 17 at the North-East Public Library at 6 p.m.

 

Tuesday, July 18

Yoga on the rooftop
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host another edition of rooftop yoga on Tuesday, July 18,  beginning at 6 p.m. Relax and rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit with an hour of yoga on the downtown Central Library’s Rooftop Terrace. Lauren Leduc, founder and teacher at Kansas City’s Karma Tribe Yoga and the city’s best yoga instructor of 2016, as selected by readers of The Pitch, leads a class suitable for all skill levels. Participants are asked to bring their own mats and water.

KCPS enrollment fairs
Kansas City Public Schools will be hosting enrollment fairs for parents and guardians to easily enroll their children in neighborhood schools on Wednesday, July 19 and Thursday, July 20 at Northeast Middle School. On Wednesday, the enrollment fair will run from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. On Thursday, the fair will run from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Students must be enrolled by July 22 in order to guarantee transportation for the 2017-2018 school year.

Blue Valley Neighborhood Association Meeting
The Blue Valley neighborhood association will meet on Thursday, July 20, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Guadalupe Center (1512 Van Brunt).

Sheffield Neighborhood Association Meeting
The next meeting of the Sheffield Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, July 24, beginning at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church (1029 Bennington). The meeting’s topic will be the $800 million G.O. Bond.
