Adult ESL class
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host an adult ESL class on Wednesday, May 31, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. In this class, attendees will learn basic English skills: grammar, listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, and conversation. Learn computer basics
The North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host a class on computer basics on Wednesday, May 31, from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. In this class, attendees will learn how to: use the mouse; use the keyboard; understand basic computer vocabulary (desktop, files, folders, scroll, etc.); navigate the desktop; and create and save a file and folder. Thursday, June 1
Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Northeast Farmer’s Market
The next Northeast Farmer’s Market will be on Thursday, June 1, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 3001 Independence Avenue, at the intersection of Independence and Gladstone Blvd. Items to be included at the market are vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and more. The weekly market will also feature live music and a dedicated kids activity tent. The market also participates in the Double Up Food Bucks KC program. This allows customers receiving SNAP benefits to double their EBT/SNAP dollars to purchase more fruits and vegetables (up to $25/week). Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, June 2, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise.

Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, June 2 from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

Hyde Park Children’s Festival
The 2017 Hyde Park Children’s Festival will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 2 at Hyde Park (36th and Gillham, KCMO). The event will begin with a family-friendly concert at 7:30 p.m., following by the screening of Zootopia, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Bring a blanket or lawn chair to this fun, free evening in the park for the entire city. Citizenship Prep at Central Branch
Head on out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Saturday, June 3 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Come learn the basic US history information, review USCIS’s 100 Questions, and practice the citizenship exam/interview in this free course. Advanced English skills preferred. All you need is a notebook and a pen.

North-East Book Club
The next edition of the North-East Book Club, held monthly at the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library, will be held on Sunday, June 4 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Come to the North-East Book Group each month to share your passion for books and join in on book discussions.

 

Monday, June 5
Public hearing to discuss single terminal at KCI
The City of Kansas City, Missouri, is considering a proposal from Burns & McDonnell to privately finance a new single terminal at Kansas City International Airport, and residents are being encouraged to join the discussion. To that end, the City has scheduled a public hearing on Monday, June 5, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Bruce R. Watkins Center (3700 Blue Parkway). The hearing will provide residents with an opportunity to learn more about the proposal recently set forth by Burns & McDonnell to use private financing to design and build a single terminal at KCI. The public will also be able to offer feedback directly to City Council members.

Story time at Central Library
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, June 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. Library guests talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special. Parking is free!

Medicare: what you need to know
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, June 6, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a free program that explains Medicare in a way that’s easy to understand. This class will be especially helpful for people turning 65 in the next few months. The group will meet in the Chairman’s Office on the first floor. RSVPs are appreciated but not required. Blue Valley Neighborhood Association Dumpster Day
The Blue Valley Neighborhood Association will host a dumpster day on Saturday, June 17 from 8 a.m. until noon. Hazardous waste, paint, tires and appliances will not be collected. Donations will be collected at each site to help continue these clean-up events. Trash drop-off locations will be at 6214 E. 17th St., 24th Street and Drury, 1800 Ewing, 1247 Hardesty, 29th Terr. and Oakley, 1900 Van Brunt, 27th and Jackson and 27th and Lister.
