Chronic disease self management seminar
Stop by the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Wednesday, May 10, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for a chronic disease self management seminar. Participants will learn about and discuss techniques that help those living with and managing long-term health conditions.

 

Thursday, May 11
Former Northeast Musicians to appear on KKFI
Former Northeast residents and musicians Bob Messina (singer) and Ron Roberts (jazz musician) will be appearing together on 90.1 KKFI on Thursday, May 11, beginning at 8:00 p.m. The Northeast-bred musicians will be talking about music and their Northeast upbringing on The Weekly Showcase.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Friday, May 12
Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, May 12 from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, May 12, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise.

‘Wayne’s World’ at Central Branch
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host a screening of Wayne’s World on Friday, May 12, beginning at 8:00 p.m. as part of its 2017 Off the Wall Film Series: Misfits, Music, and Mayhem. Bring blankets and folding chairs (no glass containers, please!) to the Rooftop Terrace of the Central Library for an evening of downtown KC skyline cinema while enjoying popcorn provided by the Friends of the Library. Sample some locally brewed ales and lagers courtesy of Kansas City Bier Company. Party on with Wayne (Mike Myers), Garth (Dana Carvey), and other assorted slackers and suits as the basement-dwelling duo tries to take their public-access TV show to the next level while fighting against corporate influence.

 

Saturday, May 13
Blue Valley Neighborhood picnic
The Blue Valley Neighborhood Association will host a picnic on Saturday, May 13 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Blue Valley Park’s (23rd and Topping) shelter house #1. Dig Day with Kansas City Boy Scouts
Head out to your local park on Saturday, May 13 to help the Kansas City-area Boy Scouts plant flower beds throughout the city. May 13 is #DigDay with the Heart of America Boy Scouts of America and #KCParks. Scouts and KC Parks employees will be planting more than 100 of the city’s community flower beds on Mother’s Day weekend to help beautify the city for spring.

Spring Walk About
The Kansas City Public Library’s North-East Branch (6000 Wilson) will host a Spring Walk About class on Monday, May 15, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The class will be held indoors, and attendees will enjoy nature scenes from around the world while they step to the beat. Visit a different place each week. Fee free to bring your pedometer, your Fitbit, or your watch, and make sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Indian Mound Neighborhood Meeting
The Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Monday, May 15 at the North-East Public Library at 6:00 p.m.

 

Tuesday, May 16
Story time at Central Library
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, May 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. Library guests talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special. Parking is free!

Public input session on KCPD Police Chief search
The last of three public input sessions to help the Board of Police Commissioners select a new Chief of Police will be held on Tuesday, May 16, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Mohart Center (3200 Wayne Ave.). Get your voice heard at this session.

KCPD Memorial Ceremony
On Thursday, May 18, beginning at 10:00 a.m., the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department will hold a Memorial Ceremony to honor fallen officers who gave their lives in service to others. The ceremony will be held outside of KCPD headquarters, located at 1125 Locust.

Blue Valley Neighborhood Association Meeting
The Blue Valley neighborhood association will meet on Thursday, May 18, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Guadalupe Center (1512 Van Brunt).

Northeast Arts KC Summer Dusk 2017 Concert Series
Summer is on the horizon, and that means the return of Northeast Arts KC’s Summer Dusk Concert Series. The free sunset concert series will be held on every 3rd Friday through September, in the Colonnade Building at Concourse Park from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.  The series will begin on Friday, May 19 with a performance from Slim Hanson & The Poor Choices. The group is led by Beau Bledsoe, who is branching out into straight up honky tonk with his new hard country band. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, and a cooler for this family-friendly event.
