Thursday, May 4
Chronic disease self management seminar
Stop by the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Thursday, May 4, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for a chronic disease self management seminar. Participants will learn about and discuss techniques that help those living with and managing long-term health conditions.

Celestial Mechanics
Stop by the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Thursday, May 4, beginning at 6:30 p.m. for a discussion with author William Least Heat-Moon about his debut novel, Celestial Mechanics: A Tale for a Mid-Winter Night, an imaginative and philosophical work. It’s about a young man, an amateur astronomer, trying to make sense of his life. His wife, who has become increasingly incompatible, disappears, and he connects with her with her sister and another, mysterious woman as he investigates. Heat-Moon, 77, has previously published eight non-fiction works, including the 1982 best-seller Blue Highways.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
Friday, May 5
Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, May 5 from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, May 5, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise.

Guadalupe Center’s Cinco de Mayo Fiesta
Guadalupe will host its 26th annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta on Friday, May 5, beginning with a concert/dance at 5:00 p.m. at the center’s administration building (1015 Avenida Cesar E. Chavez, KCMO). Three different bands will perform during the event: Mariachi Mexico, Banda Tequila, and local group La InKontenible Sonora. Admission is free.

 

Saturday, May 6
Neighborhood Clean-up
On May 6 from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., Northeast residents will have a clean up for trash, bulky items, tires and yard waste at The Concourse and Budd Park. Budd Park will have one trash truck and one leaf and brush truck, while Concourse Park will have one trash truck, one bulky item truck, one leaf and brush truck, and one rubber tire truck. During this time, Scarritt Renaissance residents will be volunteering to continue the clean up of our neighborhood lot at the northeast corner of Chestnut and Independence Avenue from 8:00-noon.

 

Sunday, May 7
North-East Book Club
Join the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 7 for the next edition of the North-East Book Club. Share your passion for books and join in on riveting book discussions with other adults.

Kemper Arena: a Kansas City Icon
Join the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 7 for the latest Missouri Valley Sundays event. This week’s event is a history lesson about Kansas City’s famed Kemper Arena. Historic preservationist Elizabeth Rosin discusses the architectural and cultural significance of Kemper Arena, its impact on the West Bottoms District, and her quest to list the venue on the National Register of Historic Places. The event is co-presented by the Historic West Bottoms Association in conjunction with its annual Heritage Week (May 5-12).

 

Monday, May 8
Spring Walk About
The Kansas City Public Library’s North-East Branch (6000 Wilson) will host a Spring Walk About class on Monday, May 8, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The class will be held indoors, and attendees will enjoy nature scenes from around the world while they step to the beat. Visit a different place each week. Fee free to bring your pedometer, your Fitbit, or your watch, and make sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Lykins Neighborhood meeting
The next Lykins Neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, May 8, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 3704 E. 12th St. Join Lykins neighbors as they review crime and grime, organize neighborhood cleanups, and focus on creating a better community. Other neighborhoods in Historic Northeast are more than welcome to join.

 

Tuesday, May 9
Story time at Central Library
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, May 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. Library guests talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special. Parking is free!

Parks Board Meeting
The next meeting of the Parks Board will on Tuesday, May 9, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the KC Parks Administration building (4600 East 63rd Street Trafficway). The Board of Parks and Recreation holds public meetings twice a month on Tuesday at the Parks and Recreation Department headquarters. All meetings start at 2 p.m. and are open to the public.

Independence Plaza Council Monthly Meeting
Independence Plaza Council will host its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Woodland Elementary School, 711 Woodland Ave., KCMO.

Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association meeting
The Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 9, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, 1750 Independence Avenue.

Blue Valley Neighborhood picnic and car show
The Blue Valley Neighborhood Association will host a picnic and vintage car show on Saturday, May 13 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Blue Valley Park’s (23rd and Topping) shelter house #1. The event will include food, drawings, games, and a slew of surprises and guests. This event will occur rain or shine.

Indian Mound Neighborhood Meeting
The Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Monday, May 15 at the North-East Public Library at 6:00 p.m.

KCPD Memorial Ceremony
On Thursday, May 18, beginning at 10:00 a.m., the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department will hold a Memorial Ceremony to honor fallen officers who gave their lives in service to others. The ceremony will be held outside of KCPD headquarters, located at 1125 Locust.
