Miss Shizuoka: Restored at Reunited – at KC Museum
The Kansas City Museum has welcomed home Miss Shizuoka, who was on a year-long loan from January to December 2016 to the prefecture of Shizuoka in Japan. Miss Shizuoka (also known as Fujiyama Mihoko) is a Japanese Friendship Doll; she is one of 58 dolls sent from Japan to the United States in 1927 as part of a doll exchange between the United States and Japan. Miss Shizuoka will only be on display in Corinthian Hall in her new kimono and with her new accouterments until April 29, so check her out now.

Kickoff: 2017 Art in the Loop
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host an Art in the Loop kickoff event on Wednesday, April 26, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The 2017 Art in the Loop Project: Cue! – a curated outdoor exhibition staged in partnership with the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and KC Streetcar – features 25 temporary artworks and performances along the city’s streetcar route, in the City Market, and at the Central Library. As the series prepares to open (May 1 through September 30), a number of the participating artists, dancers, musicians, and poets take turns discussing their works. They are introduced by curator Jessica Borusky, an artist and educator who lives and works in Kansas City. Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

North-East Library ESL classes
Come learn and practice English at the North-East Public Library Branch on Monday’s and Thursday’s from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Let the library help you adjust to U.S. culture with courses on speaking, writing, and reading English. For more information, contact the library at (816) 701-3485.

Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, April 28 from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

 

Saturday, April 29
Chalk Walk in the Historic Northeast
Head out to the annual Chalk Walk in the Historic Northeast event on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day at the fountain in Concourse Park (St. John and Benton). This free, family-friendly event transforms the dull, grey concrete of the sidewalks and surface of the Concourse Park Fountain into colorful, pastel canvases.

Pendleton Heights Garfield Street cleanup
Join your neighbors in the Pendleton Heights neighborhood on Saturday, April 29, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for a Garfield St. clean-up. Meet fellow volunteers at the intersection of Garfield and St. John, and then work your way south. Gloves and trash bags will be provided.

Scarritt Renaissance seeking volunteers for KaBOOM! playground build
The Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association has moved the date of its KaBOOM! playground build, and the neighborhood is now seeking volunteers to help with construction on Saturday, April 29, beginning at 9:00 a.m. No matter your skill level, the neighborhood can use your help. This playground is for children 2-5 years of age, which will provide them a safer alternative to previously-built playground for 5-12 year old children. If you have construction skills, if you have the ability to carry parts to those building the equipment, or if you are willing to help with food pick up,the neighborhood can use your help. If you have hand tools, mobile table/mitre saws, heavy duty long extension cords, Scarritt leaders ask that you bring them and be sure they are labeled with your name. Spring Walk About
The Kansas City Public Library’s North-East Branch (6000 Wilson) will host a Spring Walk About class on Monday, May 1, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The class will be held indoors, and attendees will enjoy nature scenes from around the world while they step to the beat. Visit a different place each week. Fee free to bring your pedometer, your Fitbit, or your watch, and make sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Story time at Central Library
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, May 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. Library guests talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special. Parking is free!

Medicare: what you need to know
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, May 2, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for a free program that explains Medicare in a way that’s easy to understand. This class will be especially helpful for people turning 65 in the next few months. We will meet in the Chairman’s Office on the first floor. RSVPs are appreciated but not required. Concourse Clean-up
On May 6 from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., Northeast residents will have a clean up for trash, bulky items, tires and yard waste at The Concourse and Budd Park. During this time, Scarritt Renaissance residents will be volunteering to continue the clean up of their neighborhood lot at the northeast corner of Chestnut and Independence Avenue from 8:00-noon.

Independence Plaza Council will host its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Woodland Elementary School, 711 Woodland Ave., KCMO.
