Letter to the Editor: HNE residents fight to overturn the City Council decision to allow KCU to walk all over our neighborhood

Northeast News
March 8, 2017

Dear Editor,
Following the Kansas City MO City Council vote last week to advance the MPD by Kansas City University that seeks to raze a number of historic structures in the Pendleton Heights Historic District, as well as vacate a stretch of Woodland Avenue North of Independence Boulevard, a group of concerned Northeast residents launched a petition drive to try and stall KCU’s expansion plans and save a group of significant historic structures in the process. As part of that effort over this past weekend, we gathered over 100 petition signatures that were notarized and turned in to the City Clerk Sunday afternoon for certification.
The signatures will need to be verified before moving forward, but once they are, we will begin the task of gathering 3317 more signatures in 40 days.
The next step is crucial. Please join the fight for our neighborhood, learn what you can do to help. The time is now to get involved and let the voters decide on this issue.
I would like to stress that this is not just a Northeast issue. The passage of this MPD will set the precedent for other institutional and corporate encroachments. This struggle is being had all over Kansas City; Southmoreland in conflict with The Nelson and West Plaza in conflict with Quick Trip are just two examples of many that this ordinance will affect.
In closing I would like to send out a HUGE “Thank You” to the many residents who have stepped up to the plate and put a lot of time and effort into this; as well as a special thank you to our two 4th District Representatives, Councilwomen Shields and Justus, for standing up to the neighborhood bully and taking a stand.
Michael G. Donnici
