KIPP KC Black History Month display
The public is invited to stop by KIPP KC (2700 E. 18th St.) on Wednesday, February 22 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to check out the school’s Black History Month display in its central hallway. Inspiration for museum artifacts came from both inside and outside the classroom. In KIPP’s third grade class, students had recently studied the celebrated singer Marian Anderson and her role combating racial prejudice. Students wrote letters dedicated to Marian for the museum. In every project and artifact in the museum, the KIPP KC students used their own voice to explore and celebrate Black history. KIPP KC collected over 200 artifacts from students, staff, and community members.

KCPS School Board meeting
Kansas City Public Schools will host its next Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, February 22, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at the KCPS Board of Education building (1211 McGee).

 

Thursday, February 23
Community Information Exchange
Head on out to the Brush Creek Community Center (3801 Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd.) on Thursday, February 23 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. to participate in a Community Information Exchange. Bring your literature, business cards and promotional items.  Each guest who arrives on time will be allowed two minutes to speak about their business, organization, neighborhood association, or upcoming event. Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Northeast Chamber’s Community Call
The Northeast Chamber of Commerce’s next Community Call will be held on Friday, February 24, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at iPho Tower (1447 Independence Ave.).

 

Saturday, February 25
Citizen Prep at North-East Public Library
Take part in a citizen prep course held on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library. The class will continue through April 8. Come to the library to learn the basic US history information, review USCIS’s 100 Questions, and practice the citizenship exam/interview in this FREE course!! Advanced English skills preferred. All you need is a notebook and a pen.

 

Central Patrol Division Open House set for Feb. 25
Come out KCPD’s Central Patrol Division (1200 E. Linwood Blvd KCMO 64109) on Saturday, February 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for an open house with Division leaders. The open house will take place in the Community Room of CPD. Major Richard Smith, the three watch Commanders along with patrol officers will be on hand to answer questions or just mingle with the community. Light refreshments will be provided. Let your neighbor know about this opportunity to get to know your Central Patrol Division leaders.

KCMO Parks and Rec 2017 shelter reservations
2017 Parks and Recreation shelter reservations have begun. Reservations can be made online or in person at the KC Parks District 3 office (6901 Elmwood Avenue), at the Loose Park Garden Center (5200  Pennsylvania), or at any of the city’s community centers. Shelters are available for rental from May 1 through October 31.  All reservations are for the entire day (9 a.m. to 10 p.m.). Monday, February 27
Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Monday, February 27 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

Sheffield Neighborhood Association Meeting
The next meeting of the Sheffield Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, February 27, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church (1029 Bennington). The meeting’s topic will be the $800 million G.O. Bond.

 

Tuesday, February 28
Story time at Central Library
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, February 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. Library guests talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special. Parking is Free!

 

Northeast Chamber of Commerce luncheon
Come out to the next Northeast Chamber of Commerce luncheon, to be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at PeachTree Cafe-teria (2128 E. 12th St and Brooklyn). Arrive early to get seating for this event, which will feature a Fat Tuesday menu. Owners Vera and Lavell Willis invite the community to try their soul food selections. The cost to attend is $20 for food and the presentation. The guest speaker for this month’s luncheon is Jessica Piedra with Immigration Professionals. Immigration policy has been the focus of rapid changes, and some questions to be addressed at the luncheon include:
-Are refugees and visa holders from certain countries allowed into the US?
-How is interior enforcement affecting our undocumented neighbors?
-What changes to the DACA program for immigrant students do we expect?

NE Chamber’s Beads, Beans and Beers
Join the Northeast Chamber of Commerce (2657 Independence Ave.) on Tuesday, February 28 from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. for their annual Mardis Gras event; Beads, Beans and Beer. The event will be held at the Chamber and CID offices. This annual party will include a raffle, costume contest, costume photos, food and drink, music and dancing.

Knights of Columbus Dinner
Join the Knights of Columbus Council #4613 for a fish fry dinner and bingo night on the evening of Friday March 3 at St. Anthony’s (3208 Lexington KCMO 64124). Dinner will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., while bingo will run from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  The cost to attend is $10 for adults, or $6 for children under the age of 12. Coffee is included; drinks and desserts will be available for $1 apiece.

 

Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Meeting
