Scarritt Mural Presentation at Kansas City Museum
Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) students will be at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) on Wednesday, December 7 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for a presentation about the Scarritt Mural Project, which was completed when the final mural paintings were installed on the morning of Friday, December 2. Students will discuss the process of creating the community beautification project at the former site of Scarritt Elementary School. This event is free and open to the public.

 

Thursday, December 8
Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Kansas City Museum – history of the R.A. Long family
Every Wednesday-Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) offers free docent-guided tours of the first floor of Corinthian Hall and the first floor of the Carriage House. These tours begin in the Carriage House. Visitors learn about the history and legacy of the Long family and of the Kansas City Museum.

Kansas City Design Center open house
Students from Kansas City Design Center (KCDC) will hold an open house on Thursday, December 8, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 1018 Baltimore to share their vision for the future of the Scarritt Renaissance neighborhood. KCDC students have come up with ideas to turn vacant, blighted lots in the community into livable properties that raise property values throughout the neighborhood. Stop by on December 8 to hear from the students directly. Light refreshments will be served during the event, and street parking is available.

 

Friday, December 9
Della Lamb Operation Santa Claus store opens Dec. 9
Della Lamb Community Services (500 Woodland) will begin distributing holiday gifts for its 42nd Annual Operation Santa Claus event on Friday, December 9, and will continue handing out items needed for a memorable holiday experience until Wednesday, December 14. The organization is still accepting donations in support of the annual event. In addition to financial contributions, the organization is seeking new toys, new clothing, Christmas groceries, gift wrap and much more. Benton Intersection ribbon cutting
The new intersection at Independence Avenue and Benton Blvd has been completed, and a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at the intersection on Friday, December 9 beginning at 10:30 a.m. to celebrate the occasion. Improvements include new traffic signals, street lighting, pedestrian lighting, pavement markings, rain gardens, sidewalks, landscaping, and site amenities.

Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Public Library
Come out to the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, December 9 from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

 

Saturday, December 10
KCMO waste tire collection event set for Dec. 10
The City of Kansas City, Missouri will host a waste tire clean-up event on Saturday, December 10, from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at 4201 Indiana. The event is free to attend for all Kansas City, Missouri residents.

Fairy Princess event at Kansas City Museum
Celebrate Kansas City’s beloved tradition of The Fairy Princess beginning on Saturday, December 10 at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone), from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The Museum invites the community to share holiday wishes with the Fairy Princess, enjoy storytelling, performances, and hands-on activities, and take home a sweet treat. This event will continue on Sunday, December 11 from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The cost to attend this event is $10 per child; no RSVP is necessary.

 

Sunday, December 11
Piano Day at Central Library
Do you or a family member play the piano? Then stop by the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Sunday, December 11 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for Piano Day. Pianists of all ages are invited to get into the holiday spirit by playing a tune on the Central Library’s grand piano on the second Sunday of December in Kirk Hall.

 

Monday, December 12
Lykins Neighborhood meeting
The next Lykins Neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, December 12, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 3704 E. 12th St. Join Lykins neighbors as they review crime and grime, organize neighborhood cleanups, and focus on creating a better community. Other neighborhoods in Historic Northeast are more than welcome to join.

Heart Healthy Screening at North-East Library
Stop by the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Monday, December 12 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. for a health screening. No appointment is necessary, and the screenings shouldn’t take long.

Independence Plaza Council will host its monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 13, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Woodland Elementary School, 711 Woodland Ave., KCMO.

The Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 13, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences,1750 Independence Avenue.
