Money Matters: Yes, I AM Janice Brown – Protecting Yourself from Identity Theft
Come by the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Road) on Wednesday, October 19 beginning at 9:00 a.m. to participate in this Money Matters course. In this 60-minute workshop, you will learn how to identify the warning signs of identity theft, Protect the identity of your children, and be proactive if you are a victim of identity theft. All attendees will receive a $30 Library fine reduction coupon which can be applied toward fines, or lost/damaged fees.

Become a Zombie at North-East Public Library
Children of all ages are invited to transform into a zombie at the North-East Public Library on Wednesday, October 19 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Make-up will be provided; have fun turning yourself and your friends into zombies.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Blue Valley Neighborhood Association Meeting
The Blue Valley neighborhood association will meet on Thursday, October 20, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Guadalupe Center on Truman Road. Look for the sign.

 

Friday, October 21
Chair fitness
Stop by the North-East Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, October 21, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for a chair fitness class. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.
Knights of Columbus Dinner/Bingo, October 21
Join the Knights of Columbus Cardinal Glennon Council #4613 for Dinner and Bingo on Friday, October 21, at St. Anthony’s – St. Joseph Hall (3208 Lexington). Dinner will be served from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., and Bingo will be held from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Enjoy Italian sausage or beef hot dogs on the grill, sandwiches, and a salad. The cost for adults to attend is $6 for the sausage, and $3 for the hot dog. Children under 12 receive $1 off. Coffee will be included; drinks and dessert also available.

 

Saturday, October 22
Prescription drug take-back event
The Kansas City Police Department is joining with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to sponsor a drug take-back event Saturday, Oct. 22. Police will be at locations throughout the City from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to collect unused prescription and over-the-counter medicine. Drugs can be handed over to police, no questions asked. Neither the DEA nor police will track who disposes of the drugs or what types of drugs. All types of drugs will be accepted from individuals with the exception of needles, injectables, and aerosols/inhalers. For Northeast residents, prescription drugs will be collected at the CVS located at 2435 Independence Avenue. The KCPD will also be conducting a prescription drug take-back at Children’s Mercy Hospital (2401 Gillham Rd.).

Computer Class – Microsoft
Join North-East Public Library for a class on the fundamentals of Microsoft Word, which will focus on templates as well as the various menu options. Class begins at 10:30 a.m. at the library, 6000 Wilson Rd.

KC Museum’s KCFD history exhibit now open
The Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) is now presenting In the Line of Duty: A History of the Kansas City, MO Fire Department from 1868-1968, an exhibition that explores stories of courage and dedication that comprise the heritage and development of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department (KCFD). From its humble beginnings in the late 1800s to international fame, and from technological triumphs to tragic losses, the KCFD has over 100 years of proud service to its community.

Day of the Dead celebration at the Kansas City Museum
Stop by the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) on Sunday, October 23 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to discover the history and cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos. Enjoy live music by Mundo Nouvo and puppetry by StoneLion Puppet Theatre, decorate sugar skulls, make tissue flowers, sample traditional Día de los Muertos bread from Panaderia de las Americas, and contribute to a community altar installation (which will remain on display through Saturday, November 5). Kids can enjoy free Day of the Dead face-painting from 2:00-4:00 p.m. by Sister Act Face Painting. This program is presented in partnership with Mattie Rhodes Center, and is free to attend. All ages welcome! Bring a picnic and enjoy the historic grounds.

Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, October 25, beginning at 2:00 p.m. for a crash course in technology. Learn to find the answer to all your technology questions online using these powerful free websites. This class is appropriate for all skill levels from beginner to advanced and covers Lynda, GCFLearnfree, Youtube and much more. Basic computer skills are recommended.

Knights of Columbus to host free movie night on October 27
The Knights of Columbus Cardinal Glennon Council #4613 will host a free movie night on Thursday, October 27 at St. Anthony’s – St. Joseph Hall (3208 Lexington). The night will feature a screening of Becket, featuring Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole. Concessions will be available, including popcorn, snacks, hot dogs, nachos and cheese, and drinks. Please do not bring outside food or drinks. Seating begins at 6:30 p.m., and the movie begins at 7:00 p.m.

United Inner City Services Annual Fall Festival – October 28
Join United Inner City Services (2008 E. 12th Street, Kansas City, MO 64127) on Friday, October 28 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. for their Annual Fall Festival. This year’s theme is “Harvest a Healthy Lifestyle.” Entertainment for the evening includes a Family Puppet Workshop courtesy of the Mesner Puppet Theatre. The workshop will include an opportunity to interact directly with the puppets. There will also be games, food, prizes, free pumpkins, and the opportunity to meet with community sponsors. In addition, a Walgreens Flu Shot Clinic will be hosted on site from 3:00 p.m. until the event ends at 7:00 p.m.
