Northeast photography exhibit on display at KC Museum
The exhibit Passing Me By: Snapshots of Northeast, 1996 to 2016 will be displayed at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) from September 17 to October 15. Through film and digital mediums, Bryan Atkinson seeks to present a vibrant portrait of Kansas City’s Historic Northeast community.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Friday, October 7
Chair fitness
Stop by the North-East Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, October 7, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for a chair fitness class. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.
Northeast Arts KC to host Pop-up Art event at Safari Cafe
Northeast Arts KC invites the community to join them at Safari Cafe (2605 Independence Ave.) to enjoy a pop-up art gallery on Friday, October 14, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Park University, CORO, Northeast Arts KC and the Northeast KC Chamber helped transform the walls of the Safari Cafe for artists to show their work in Northeast; the first showing will feature the work of area photographer Danielle Nicole Humphrey.

Computer Class- Internet basics
Learn what the Internet and your Internet browser can do. Class begins at 10:30 a.m. at the North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd.
Cliffhanger 5K/8K set for October 8
This year’s Cliffhanger Run, sponsored by Kansas City University, will be held on Saturday, October 8, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The race will begin and conclude at the KCU campus at 1750 Independence Avenue.
Kessler Fiesta
This year’s Kessler Fiesta – a celebration of outdoor sports – will be held on Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9. A dirt jump jam will also be held on Friday evening. Saturday will include downhill mountain biking, cyclocross, and Cliffhanger races. Sunday will include a trail run, longboarding stoke clinic, cross country mountain biking, and cyclocross races. Demos will be conducted all weekend for disc golf, natural rock climbing, and cycling.
Kansas City University to celebrate 100 years
Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (1750  Independence Ave.) will host a neighborhood birthday party on Saturday, October 8, to celebrate the school’s 100th year. The party will take place from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., and everyone is welcome. Free food, lawn games, live music, soccer clinics, balloon artists, face painting, a photo booth, and a youth bike giveaway will all be included.

Chess club

Knights of Columbus breakfast
Come out for a Knights of Columbus Council #4613 breakfast on Sunday, October 9, from 8:30 a.m. until noon at St. Anthony’s Church (3208 Lexington KCMO 64124). The traditional Knights breakfast includes sausage patties, pancakes, scrambled eggs and chorizo, along with coffee and orange juice to drink. The cost is $6 for adults, or $3 for children under 12.

English for Citizenship
Join the North-East Public Library at 1:00 a.m. for a free course designed to improve your English speaking, reading, listening, and pronunciation skills. Practice and prepare for the USCIS naturalization test. Contact Julie Robinson at 816.701.3587 to register. Please bring a notebook and pen.
Lykins Neighborhood meeting
The next Lykins Neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, October 10, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 3704 E. 12th St. Join Lykins neighbors as they review crime and grime, organize neighborhood cleanups, and focus on creating a better community. Other neighborhoods in Historic Northeast are more than welcome to join.

Read, Quilt, Talk book club
Join the Northeast Book Club from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11 for the Read, Quilt, Talk book club. Enjoy group book discussions while working on quilting projects. Beginners are welcome to attend. This class is designed for adults.

The Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 11, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences,1750 Independence Avenue.

Independence Plaza Council will host its monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 11, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Woodland Elementary School, 711 Woodland Ave., KCMO.

Northeast Fall Homes Tour
The Northeast Kansas City Historical Society is proud to announce its fifth annual Fall Homes Tour to be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m on Saturday, October 15, 2016.  The first floors of five classic houses will be featured on this year’s tour.  The destinations were built in the early 1900s and one is a classic example of adaptive reuse of an old fire station into residential living. Advance tickets may be purchased online for the cost of $12 each. Tickets purchased on October 15th will be $15 each. Children under 12 are admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult.   On the day of the Tour, pick up tickets at the Sales Tent at 3241 East Tenth Street, on the southwest corner at Indiana Avenue.  Checks for advanced purchases may be mailed to NEKCHS, PO Box 270193, Kansas City, MO   64127-0193.
KC Museum to open new KCFD exhibit October 15
Beginning on Thursday, October 15, the Kansas City Museum will present In the Line of Duty: A History of the Kansas City, MO Fire Department from 1868-1968, an exhibition that explores stories of courage and dedication that comprise the heritage and development of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department (KCFD). From its humble beginnings in the late 1800s to international fame, and from technological triumphs to tragic losses, the KCFD has over 100 years of proud service to its community.
