RideKC Regional Transit Plan public meeting

Mid America Regional Council (MARC) has scheduled a public meeting regarding the RideKC Regional Transit Plan on Wednesday, August 10, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (1750 Independence Ave, Kansas City, MO 64106). Come out and get your opinion about the region’s transit plan heard.

KC Museum Hard Hat Tour

Take a hard hat tour of Corinthian Hall, the 100+ year old home of lumber baron Robert A. Long and his family. On these tours, you will see remaining original architecture on the first floors of Corinthian Hall (the mansion) and the Carriage House. Admission is free and tours will be held Wednesday through Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the museum, 3218 Gladstone Blvd.

Northeast Farmers’ Market

The Northeast Farmers’ Market (3001 Independence Ave., KCMO 64124) will be open on Thursday, August 11, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a wide assortment of vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and coffee.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic grand opening

The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) will host a grand opening celebration for it’s new evening health clinic, named La Clinica, on Thursday, August 11, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Fresh fruit from Cosentino’s has been donated for the event. The clinic will be open on Thursday evenings each week, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Latinos and Baseball – Kansas City Museum panel

As one of 10 organizations partnering with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History on the ‘Latinos and Baseball: In the Barrios and the Big Leagues’ multi-year collecting initiative, the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone Boulevard) will host a panel discussion on Friday, August 12, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The panel will include professors Jorge Iber and Ben Chappell, as well as former Major League Baseball player Diego Segui and Paul Briones, the nephew of Tony Aguirre. RSVP is required to attend the panel discussion.

Chair fitness

Stop by the North-East Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, August 12, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for a chair fitness class. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to give you a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

KC Museum Summer Concert Series

The next concert in the Kansas City Museum’s Summer Concert Series will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 12 at the museum. Enrique and Diego from Making Movies will perform. Making Movies is an American band based out of Kansas City, Missouri. Built upon a heavy foundation of Afro-Latino rhythms, they have created a bilingual (English and Spanish), psychedelic re-envisioning of the Latin American “son.” This performance is free to attend. Dogs are allowed in a designated area.

Latinos and Baseball: “Los Sabios” Memorial Fast Pitch Softball Game

On day two of the Kansas City Museum’s ‘Latinos and Baseball: In the Barrios and the Big Leagues’ weekend event, former local baseball and softball players will gather at Penn Valley Park (2698 Main) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to participate in Memorial Exhibition softball games. There will be two age divisions for former men’s players, and one age division for former women’s players. The softball games will be followed by a local food truck lunch, as well as the collection of artifacts and archival materials as part of the museum’s collecting initiative with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

Computer Class- Internet basics

Learn what the Internet and your Internet browser can do. Class begins at 10:30 a.m. at the North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd.

‘Mystery Train: the Chicago Caper’ at NE Libary

Join the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Road) on Sunday, August 14 beginning at 1:30 p.m. for the ‘Mystery Train: the Chicago Caper’ performance. The library’s mystery play, “The Chicago Caper” is set in the late 1920s in a Chicago speakeasy, replete with flappers, men in pinstripes and jazz! Come join in and watch the fun .

Lykins Neighborhood meeting

The next Lykins Neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, August 15, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Eleos Coffee House (3401 Independence Ave.). Join Lykins neighbors for coffee as they review crime and grime, organize neighborhood cleanups, and focus on creating a better community. Other neighborhoods in Historic Northeast are more than welcome to join.

Indian Mound Neighborhood Meeting

Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Monday, August 15 at the North-East Public Library at 6:30 p.m.

Black Archives of Mid-America ‘With My Eyes No Longer Blind’ Exhibit

This permanent exhibit – named for the Langston Hughes poem – tells the story of African Americans in Kansas City from the time of Lewis and Clark to the mayorship of Emmanuel Cleaver II. Arranged both chronologically and thematically, this exhibit explores the development of churches, schools, places of entertainment, political organizations, businesses, and social clubs.
