Northeast Farmers’ Market

The Northeast Farmers’ Market (3001 Independence Ave., KCMO 64124) will be open on Thursday, August 4, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a wide assortment of vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and coffee.

Mattie Rhodes Center – Back to School rally

The Mattie Rhodes Center is hosting their annual back to school rally on Thursday, August 4, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at their Northeast office (148 N. Topping Ave., KCMO 64108). The center will give out free back-to-school materials, while also providing information and resources that students need to have a successful academic year.

Diabetes Self-Management Program

Come to the North-East Public Library at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 4 for a diabetes self-management program. The program is open to all adults and free of charge. This workshop would benefit you if you have been diagnosed with diabetes, are living with someone with diabetes, or taking care of someone with diabetes.

First Fridays at 18th and Vine – mural project

Come on out to the 18th and Vine District on the evening of Friday, August 5 for a full slate of activities to celebrate First Fridays. This event will include food, youth activities, music, and shopping. The highlighted event for this month will be the production a giant public mural depicting the past, present, and future of Kansas City’s famous and revitalizing Jazz District. Volunteers will be asked to help paint the nine-panel canvas mural from 3:30 p.m. until dusk, in the spirit of creating “Harmony on the Vine.”

Knights of Columbus fish fry and bingo

The Knights of Columbus Cardinal Glennon Council # 4613 will host a fish fry and bingo night on Friday, August 5 at St. Anthony’s – St. Joseph Hall (3208 Lexington). Dinner runs from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and bingo runs from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Dinner is $9, and includes beer battered codfish and shrimp, fries, and coleslaw. Coffee and drinks included.

Second time around: the hubcap as art

The Kansas City Public Library’s Central branch hosts this traveling exhibit until August 8. The exhibit inspires viewers to reflect on the role of consumption in American culture and stimulate creative thinking about ways to re-use and recycle. Thousands of artists responded, and the top 35 submitted works make up the exhibit, which can be viewed at the KCPL Central branch (14 W 10th St., Kansas City, MO 64105) during regular library hours, which are typically from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Learn about navigating your computer in this class, which offers insight into hardware and software components. Class begins at 10:30 a.m. at the North-East Public Library.

KCPS Summerfest

Kansas City Public Schools will welcome students back with its Summerfest back to school festival, to be held on Saturday, August 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. outside of the district’s new headquarters (2901 Troost). Meet new superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell and enjoy free food, live music, athletic activities, a book nook, and more. Pre-register for the event at www.kcpublicschools.org/Summerfest to guarantee that your KCPS student receives a free backpack, while supplies last.

KC Museum Hard Hat Tour

Take a hard hat tour of Corinthian Hall, the 100+ year old home of lumber baron Robert A. Long and his family. On these tours, you will see remaining original architecture on the first floors of Corinthian Hall (the mansion) and the Carriage House. Admission is free and tours will be held Wednesday through Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the museum, 3218 Gladstone Blvd.

Black Archives of Mid-America ‘With My Eyes No Longer Blind’ Exhibit

This permanent exhibit – named for the Langston Hughes poem – tells the story of African Americans in Kansas City from the time of Lewis and Clark to the mayorship of Emmanuel Cleaver II. Arranged both chronologically and thematically, this exhibit explores the development of churches, schools, places of entertainment, political organizations, businesses, and social clubs.
