Northeast HS seeking mentors at July 27 meeting

Northeast High School (415 S. Van Brunt, KCMO 64124) will host an introductory meeting on Wednesday, July 27, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Viking Nation library for potential mentors who wish to participate in the school’s ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ mentorship program. The program is designed to encourage all students to attend school daily, and to excel academically. The meeting is expected to last for approximately 15 minutes. Budgeting: the Money Diet

Stop by the North-East Public Library on Wednesday, July 27 beginning at 11:30 a.m. for a 60-minute course on budgeting. Learn how to identify the components of a budget, take a snapshot of your finances, set and achieve goals, and implement everyday savings. All attendees will receive a $30 Library fine reduction coupon which can be applied toward fines or lost/damaged fees.

The Northeast Farmers’ Market (3001 Independence Ave., KCMO 64124) will be open on Thursday, July 28, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a wide assortment of vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and coffee.

Community Conversation: CORO KC

Join the Independence Avenue CID at the North-East Public Library on Thursday, July 28, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for a community conversation with Park University’s CORO KC interns, who completed a community service day in the Northeast on Saturday, July 23.

Adult Thursday – Wii game

Come in to the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd) on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. to play Wii games and board games with other adults.

Walk with ease

Come to the North-East Public Library at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 28 to learn tips about easing your arthritis pain. This course will teach participants how to walk and stretch safely, increase flexibility, and improve balance. Weekly incentives will be given to participants. Join the library to learn how walking can improve your fitness and help manage your arthritis pain.

Second time around: the hubcap as art

The Kansas City Public Library’s Central branch hosts this traveling exhibit until August 8. A non-profit organization asked artists throughout the United States to turn discarded hubcaps into fine art. Collectively, they inspire viewers to reflect on the role of consumption in American culture and stimulate creative thinking about ways to re-use and recycle. Thousands of artists responded, and the top 35 submitted works make up the exhibit, which can be viewed at the KCPL Central branch (14 W 10th St., Kansas City, MO 64105) during regular library hours, which are typically from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

KC Museum Hard Hat Tour

Take a hard hat tour of Corinthian Hall, the 100+ year old home of lumber baron Robert A. Long and his family. On these tours, you will see remaining original architecture on the first floors of Corinthian Hall (the mansion) and the Carriage House. Admission is free and tours will be held Wednesday through Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the museum, 3218 Gladstone Blvd.

Black Archives of Mid-America ‘With My Eyes No Longer Blind’ Exhibit

This permanent exhibit – named for the Langston Hughes poem – tells the story of African Americans in Kansas City from the time of Lewis and Clark to the mayorship of Emmanuel Cleaver II. Arranged both chronologically and thematically, this exhibit explores the development of churches, schools, places of entertainment, political organizations, businesses, and social clubs.

Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Meeting

The next Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association meeting will be held on Monday, August 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone).

National World War I Museum

Check out the exhibit ‘Images of the Great War: European Offensives 1914-1916’ daily at the National World War I Musuem (100 W 26th St., Kansas City, MO 64108), from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The exhibit focuses on the art and events of the first two years of the Great War, featuring artists from eight different countries.

Join the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays to learn basic English skills: reading, writing, and conversation. No fee or books required.

Kansas City Public Schools will welcome students back with its Summerfest back to school festival, to be held on Saturday, August 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. outside of the district’s new headquarters (2901 Troost). Meet new superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell and enjoy free food, live music, athletic activities, a book nook, and more. Mattie Rhodes Center – Back to School rally

The Mattie Rhodes Center is hosting their annual back to school rally on Thursday, August 4, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at their Northeast office (148 N. Topping Ave., KCMO 64108). The center will give out free back-to-school materials, while also providing information and resources that students need to have a successful academic year.
