Join the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays to learn basic English skills: reading, writing, and conversation. No fee or books required.

Storytime in Penguin Park

Join KC Parks and the Mid-Continent Library for fun in the fresh air on Wednesday, July 20, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Penguin Park (North Vivion Road and North Norton Avenue). Playtime songs and games, stories, and crafts. Open to any age child and their caregiver.

Blue Valley Neighborhood Association Meeting

The Blue Valley neighborhood association will meet on Thursday, July 21, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Guadalupe Center on Truman Road. Look for the sign.

Northeast Farmers’ Market

The Northeast Farmers’ Market (3001 Independence Ave., KCMO 64124) will be open on Thursday, July 21, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a wide assortment of vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and coffee.

Adult Thursday – Wii game

Come in to the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd) on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. to play Wii games and board games with other adults.

Diabetes Self-Management Program

Come to the North-East Public Library at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 21 for a diabetes self-management program. The program is open to all adults and free of charge. This workshop would benefit you if you have been diagnosed with diabetes, are living with someone with diabetes, or taking care of someone with diabetes.

Second time around: the hubcap as art

The Kansas City Public Library’s Central branch hosts this traveling exhibit until August 8. A non-profit organization asked artists throughout the United States to turn discarded hubcaps into fine art. Collectively, they inspire viewers to reflect on the role of consumption in American culture and stimulate creative thinking about ways to re-use and recycle. Thousands of artists responded, and the top 35 submitted works make up the exhibit, which can be viewed at the KCPL Central branch (14 W 10th St., Kansas City, MO 64105) during regular library hours, which are typically from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Friday in the Park at Macken Park

Come out and listen to the sound of New Orleans courtesy of Hogfish Gumbo on Friday, July 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at North Kansas City’s Festival Pavilion in Macken Park. All concerts are free and open to the public, and every event features a drawing for prizes donated by local businesses. For more information, visit www.nkc.org.

KC Museum Hard Hat Tour

Take a hard hat tour of Corinthian Hall, the 100+ year old home of lumber baron Robert A. Long and his family. On these tours, you will see remaining original architecture on the first floors of Corinthian Hall (the mansion) and the Carriage House. Admission is free and tours will be held Wednesday through Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the museum, 3218 Gladstone Blvd.

Computer Class – Microsoft

Join North-East Public Library for a class on the fundamentals of Microsoft Word, which will focus on templates as well as the various menu options. Class begins at 10:30 a.m. at the library, 6000 Wilson Rd.

Black Archives of Mid-America ‘With My Eyes No Longer Blind’ Exhibit

This permanent exhibit – named for the Langston Hughes poem – tells the story of African Americans in Kansas City from the time of Lewis and Clark to the mayorship of Emmanuel Cleaver II. Arranged both chronologically and thematically, this exhibit explores the development of churches, schools, places of entertainment, political organizations, businesses, and social clubs.

National World War I Museum

Check out the exhibit ‘Images of the Great War: European Offensives 1914-1916’ daily at the National World War I Musuem (100 W 26th St., Kansas City, MO 64108), from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The exhibit focuses on the art and events of the first two years of the Great War, featuring artists from eight different countries.

Northeast HS seeking mentors at July 27 meeting

Northeast High School (415 S. Van Brunt, KCMO 64124) will host an introductory meeting on Wednesday, July 27, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Viking Nation library for potential mentors who wish to participate in the school’s ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ mentorship program. The program is designed to encourage all students to attend school daily, and to excel academically. The meeting is expected to last for approximately 15 minutes. KCPS Summerfest
