KC Public Library – Central Branch presents ‘Shakespeare’s Questionable Identity’

Come by the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Wednesday, July 13, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. for a presentation about the identity of William Shakespeare. Some have trouble squaring the Bard’s works with the life of the presumed author from Stratford-upon-Avon, holding that only an aristocrat, which he was not, could have penned such elevated prose. Oxfordian’s point to Edward De Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, who was the most flamboyant of the courtier poets of the time and a theater and literary patron. The University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Felicia Hardison Londré delves into the sensitive question of authorship in an illustrated presentation.

Northeast Farmers’ Market

The Northeast Farmers’ Market (3001 Independence Ave., KCMO 64124) will be open on Thursday, July 14, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a wide assortment of vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and coffee.

Adult Thursday – Wii game

Come in to the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd) on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. to play Wii games and board games with other adults.

Diabetes Self-Management Program

Come to the North-East Public Library at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 14 for a diabetes self-management program. The program is open to all adults and free of charge. This workshop would benefit you if you have been diagnosed with diabetes, are living with someone with diabetes, or taking care of someone with diabetes.

Third Fridays in Columbus Park

Check out the art scene in Columbus Park on Third Thursdays, to be celebrated this month on Friday, July 15. The Trap Gallery (525 Gillis) will be showing Charles Ray’s exhibit ‘Pontification of Nothingness’ from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Kiosk Gallery (916 E. 5th St.), 815 Gallery (815 E. 5th St.), and Blau Space Gallery (520 Gillis) will also be featuring exhibits. The Columbus Park Ramen Shop and The North End will be open and serving food, while Hail Coffee and the Cirque du Suqre sweets truck will also be on site.

Brother John at the North-East library

The North-East invites the public to a morning of music on Friday, July 15 beginning at 10:00 a.m. Through story-telling and song, vocalist and cultural historian Brother John helps young audience members explore history. This event is recommended for children ages 5 and older.

Computer Class – email

Sign up for a free e-mail account and follow along with this tutorial that teaches the ins and outs of sending and receiving email, as well as how to organize your messages. Class begins at 10:30 a.m. at the North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd.

Northeast Community Days at Budd Park

Come out to Budd Park on Saturday, July 16 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for the next Northeast Community Days celebration. Take part in slip & slide kickball, enjoy hot dogs off the grill, compete in water games, and have fun with your neighbors at Budd Park.

Chess club

Kansas City’s Big Picnic 2016

Kansas City Parks and Recreation will partner with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art on Sunday, July 17, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for the biggest picnic in the region. Celebrate National Park and Recreation month as the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park and Theis Park will be linked to become a giant space for Kansas City to come together for an evening of fun. Pack your own picnic or grab dinner from an on-site food truck. Highlights will include musical performances, the Plein Air “Quick Paint” Contest, recreation stations featuring badminton, lawn games and the Imagination Playground, and more. This event is rain or shine; no grills, no stakes, no tenting. Note: Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd. from Oak Street to Rockhill Road will be closed for the Big Picnic from 2-8 p.m.

Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting on Monday, July 18 at the North-East Public Library at 6:30 p.m.

Lykins Neighborhood meeting

The next Lykins Neighborhood meeting will be held on Monday, July 18, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Eleos Coffee House (3401 Independence Ave.). Join Lykins neighbors for coffee as they review crime and grime, organize neighborhood cleanups, and focus on creating a better community. Other neighborhoods in Historic Northeast are more than welcome to join.

National World War I Museum

Check out the exhibit ‘Images of the Great War: European Offensives 1914-1916’ daily at the National World War I Museum (100 W 26th St., Kansas City, MO 64108), from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The exhibit focuses on the art and events of the first two years of the Great War, featuring artists from eight different countries.

Northeast HS seeking mentors at July 27 meeting

Northeast High School (415 S. Van Brunt, KCMO 64124) will host an introductory meeting on Wednesday, July 27, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Viking Nation library for potential mentors who wish to participate in the school’s ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ mentorship program. The program is designed to encourage all students to attend school daily, and to excel academically. The meeting is expected to last for approximately 15 minutes.
