KC Museum open house – renovations

The Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) will host a free open house on Wednesday, June 29, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to learn about and discuss the museum’s Strategic Plan and Business Plan, along with the design process for future stages of renovation. There is no formal presentation, and community members are welcome to come anytime during open house hours. Refreshments will be provided, and parking, including accessible parking, is available in the Museum’s parking lot, with street parking that is also available.

ESL Class

Join the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays to learn basic English skills: reading, writing, and conversation. No fee or books required.

Northeast Farmers’ Market

The Northeast Farmers’ Market (3001 Independence Ave., KCMO 64124) will be open on Thursday, June 30, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a wide assortment of vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and coffee.

Adult Thursday – Wii game

Come in to the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd) on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. to play Wii games and board games with other adults.

Chair fitness

Join North-East Public Library at 9:30 a.m. for physical fitness. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to give you a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

First Fridays at 18th and Vine

Come on out to the 18th and Vine District on the evening of Friday, July 1 for a full slate of activities to celebrate First Fridays. This event will include food, youth activities, music, and shopping.

Heart of America Shakespeare Festival

The 24th iteration of the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival has begun, and performances of Twelfth Night will run Tuesdays-Sundays beginning at 8:00 p.m., through July 3 at Southmoreland Park (Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard and Oak Street).

Computer Class – Microsoft

Join North-East Public Library for a class on the fundamentals of Microsoft Word, which will focus on templates as well as the various menu options. Class begins at 10:30 a.m. at the library, 6000 Wilson Rd.

Chess club

Join the Kings Club Youth Chess Team at 10 a.m. every Sunday at New Beginning Apostolic Church, 200 N. Bales Ave. All kids 3rd-12th grades are welcome. Contact Gaston Woodland (816- 977-0470) for more information.

Monday, July 4

Scarritt Renaissance Fourth of July party

The Scarritt Renaissance neighborhood association will host a community party on Monday, July 4, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. at The Concourse. The evening of fun will include a laser light show, a water balloon fight (feel free to bring own supplies to supplement those provided), a D.A.R.E. police car, games, food trucks, and of course the new embankment slide. There will be a police presence at the park to keep people from lighting off fireworks.

Celebrate the Fourth of July at Riverfest

Happy Fourth of July! Bring the whole family out to Berkley Riverfront Park (Grand Blvd. and River Front Rd.) on July 4 between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. for free entry to KC Riverfest. There will be two stages of music going from 5:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m., and of course the evening will conclude with a fireworks demonstration over the Missouri River beginning at 9:30 p.m. After 5:00 p.m., the cost to enter is $5. The event will also include food, drinks, and family fun.

Black Archives of Mid-America ‘With My Eyes No Longer Blind’ Exhibit

This permanent exhibit – named for the Langston Hughes poem – tells the story of African Americans in Kansas City from the time of Lewis and Clark to the mayorship of Emmanuel Cleaver II. Arranged both chronologically and thematically, this exhibit explores the development of churches, schools, places of entertainment, political organizations, businesses, and social clubs.

World Refugee Day

The Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCUMB) will host a World Refugee Day celebration on Saturday, July 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 1750 Independence Avenue. The event will begin with a panel discussion with local refugees, resettlement agencies, and others. The panel discussion will be followed by music, traditional dance, and food. This is part of an annual event by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

Spaghetti Dinner – Independence Boulevard Christian

A benefit spaghetti dinner will be held Sunday, July 10th, 2016 from 12:30 to 2:30. The dinner is sponsored by the Deacons of Independence Boulevard Christian Church, 606 Gladstone Blvd. The cost for Individuals is $5, and $10 for families. Teddy Bear Picnic at Kansas City Museum

The Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) will celebrate National Teddy Bear Picnic Day on Friday, July 8, with a party on its front lawn from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Pack a picnic, bring a blanket, and grab your favorite teddy bear(s) for an afternoon of fun at the museum with music, games, crafts and more. No pets are allowed. Featuring music by Janie Next Door. There is no cost to attend but registration is limited.
