Independence Ave. Overlay District Public Meeting

Interested individuals are invited to the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences’ Butterworth Alumni Center (1750 Independence Ave., KCMO 64106) at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4, for the last public meeting where the community can receive information on the Independence Avenue overlay district before the issue goes before the Planning Commission on Tuesday, June 7.

Substance abuse recovery

Pueblo to Pueblo

Join the Kansas City Museum for its latest exhibit, Pueblo to Pueblo: The Legacy of Southwest Indian Pottery and Now & Then. The exhibit runs from now until June 25 in Corinthian Hall and is free to view. At 3 p.m., head over to the North-East Library for a Chronic Disease Management Workshop. Open to all adults and free of charge. This workshop would benefit you if you have been diagnosed with a chronic disease, are living with someone with a chronic disease, or taking care of someone with a chronic disease.

Cinco de Mayo celebration, ribbon cutting at Gringo Loco

Head over to Gringo Loco on Thursday, May 5 at 12:00 p.m. as the grocery store holds a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate recent renovations. The ribbon cutting will be followed by food and refreshments at the site, in honor of the Cinco de Mayo holiday.

Adult Thursday – Wii Bowling

Come in to the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd) on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. to play Wii Bowling with other adults.

Great flood of 1993 exhibit now open at St. Joseph Museum

Come out to St. Joseph’s Wyeth-Tootle Mansion (1100 Charles Street, 64501) to see a new display about 1993’s 500-year flood. “Confluence: The Great Flood of 1993” is newly open, and will run through 2018. The exhibit will explore the causes and provide a social history of the 1993 flood through videos and photographs. Kansas City community streetcar celebration

The public is invited to enjoy the grand opening of the new Kansas City streetcar with a two-day celebration on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7. A ceremony will be held at Union Station at 10:00 a.m. on May 6 to begin festivities along the two-mile streetcar route. Many special streetcar-related events are planned in downtown Kansas City, including: First Friday (and Saturday this time) in the Crossroads Arts District; a family-friendly festival with carnival rides at Union Station; fireworks on Friday and Saturday night from Liberty Memorial; books + coffee at the Library streetcar stop; special airing ofStreetcar Named Desiremovie in City Market Park; and live music and entertainment throughout the KC Streetcar route. There will also be a stationary streetcar parked at Union Station near Pershing Road for your chance to take a selfie with the streetcar.

Chair fitness

Join North-East Public Library at 9:30 a.m. for physical fitness. No matter what your limitations, maybe you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to give you a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

Dig Day

The Heart of America Boy Scouts and KC Parks and Rec will team up to plant at more than 100 of the city’s flower beds on Mother’s Day weekend to help beautify the city.

Computer Class–general

Learn about navigating your computer in this class, which offers insight into hardware and software components. Class begins at 10:30 a.m. at the North-East Public Library.

Black Archives of Mid-America ‘With My Eyes No Longer Blind’ Exhibit

This permanent exhibit – named for the Langston Hughes poem – tells the story of African Americans in Kansas City from the time of Lewis and Clark to the mayorship of Emmanuel Cleaver II. Arranged both chronologically and thematically, this exhibit explores the development of churches, schools, places of entertainment, political organizations, businesses, and social clubs.

Pendleton Heights, Independence Plaza Neighborhood Association meetings

On Tuesday, May 10, the Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting from 7 – 8 p.m. at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, East Independence Avenue. The Independence Plaza Neighborhood Council will also host its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Woodland Elementary, 711 Woodland Ave.

Scarritt Renaissance playground grand opening

The grand opening celebration for the new playground at Kessler Park in the Scarritt Renaissance neighborhood will be held on Saturday, May 14, from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. at The Concourse. The playground will feature the first embankment slide in the area.

Indian Mound neighborhood meeting

The Indian Mound neighborhood association will meet on Monday, May 16 at the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd.). The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.
