Urban Youth Academy ground-breaking

The Kansas City MLB Urban Youth Academy ground-breaking ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Parade Park on April 20. The new indoor training facility will feature four state-of-the-art diamonds to enhance the 18th and Vine District.

Call for Artists for Chalk Walk in the Historic Northeast

Northeast Arts KC is still looking for artists to participate in Chalk Walk in the Historic Northeast, set to begin on Saturday, April 23. Go to northeastartskc.org to register.In addition, tent space is available for organizations who pre-register.

Pueblo to Pueblo

Join the Kansas City Museum for its latest exhibit, Pueblo to Pueblo: The Legacy of Southwest Indian Pottery and Now & Then. NEAT general meeting

Northeast Alliance Together (NEAT) will hold its general meeting on Thursday, April 21, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Kansas City University’s Butterworth Alumni Center (1740 Independence Ave., KCMO, 64106). Along with hearing about NEAT’s activities over the past month, there will also be a presentation from the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) on public transportation issues in the Northeast, especially along Independence Avenue.

Girls HS soccer

The East High School girls’ varsity soccer team will face off again Christ Prep on Thursday, April 21, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Anderson Field (1601 Forest Ave., KCMO 64108). Immediately following that game, the Lincoln Prep girls’ varsity team will match up with Cristo Rey, beginning at roughly 5:30 p.m.

At 3 p.m., head over to the North-East Library for a Chronic Disease Management Workshop. Open to all adults and free of charge. This workshop would benefit you if you have been diagnosed with a chronic disease, are living with someone with a chronic disease, or taking care of someone with a chronic disease.

Great flood of 1993 exhibit now open at St. Joseph Museums

Come out to St. Joseph’s Wyeth-Tootle Mansion (1100 Charles Street, 64501) to see a new display about 1993’s 500-year flood. “Confluence: The Great Flood of 1993” is newly open, and will run through 2018. The exhibit will explore the causes and provide a social history of the 1993 flood through videos and photographs. Chair fitness

Join North-East Public Library at 9:30 a.m. for physical fitness. No matter what your limitations, maybe you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to give you a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

Join North-East Public Library for its weekly story time and craft at 10:30 a.m. Parents and kids will enjoy stories geared toward toddlers and pre-schoolers. Get ready for songs, tongue twisters and dramatic play.

Chalk Walk in the Historic Northeast

The 9th annual Chalk Walk in the Historic Northeast event, put on by Northeast Arts KC, will take place on April 23 and April 24, 2016, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at The Concourse Fountain at Kessler Park (200 Benton Blvd.). This free event will feature a picnic, the Stone Lion Puppets, a DJ, and free books from the NE Library.

Join the North-East Public Library at 10 a.m. to learn how to speak conversational Spanish.

Computer Class-Microsoft

Join North-East Public Library for a class on the fundamentals of Microsoft Word, which will focus on templates as well as the various menu options. Class begins at 10:30 a.m. at the library, 6000 Wilson Rd.

Black Archives of Mid-America ‘With My Eyes No Longer Blind’ Exhibit

This permanent exhibit – named for the Langston Hughes poem – tells the story of African Americans in Kansas City from the time of Lewis and Clark to the mayorship of Emmanuel Cleaver II. Arranged both chronologically and thematically, this exhibit explores the development of churches, schools, places of entertainment, political organizations, businesses, and social clubs.

This year’s Spring Clean-up in the Concourse (Benton Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64123) is slated for Saturday, April 30th, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This clean-up is for KCMO residents only. Trash, yard waste, and bulky items will be collected, and old tires can be disposed of.
