“Fast, easy friendly.”

Those are the first three words on the Speedy Cash website used to describe the Speedy Cash experience. This news-dog begs to differ and would argue that a host of other HNE residents would agree. The demolition process for the Speedy Cash building at Independence and Prospect has not been fast. It certainly has not been easy, nor has it been friendly. Worst neighbor ever would be a more apt description of the way Speedy Cash has behaved following the deadly October 12th fire that killed two Kansas City firefighters.

If you were unaware, the company has once again appealed the city’s demolition order of the building, as well as the revocation of its Certificate of Legal Nonconforming Use, something all payday loan operations must have in order to operate within the city limits of Kansas City. The case will now be heard by the city’s Board of Zoning Adjustment. Since the fire, Speedy Cash has proven time and again it has no intention of being a good neighbor, despite numerous requests by Northeast residents and news outlets to tear the building down so that the neighborhood, as well as the families of the fallen firefighters, can have some semblance of closure and move on with their lives.

Speedy Cash, however, seems to want to inflict as much pain as possible for as long as possible on the community by blatantly abusing the appeal process and letting stand the skeletal remains of a building that, by all accounts, should have been demolished immediately after the fire investigation concluded in November. Note to the hot shot, $400-an-hour Speedy Cash attorneys, this community is dedicated to making sure your client doesn’t do business on that corner ever again and we won’t rest until the hulking shell of a building has become a pile of rubble.
