Last week, our illustrious Mayor rolled out a brand spankin’ new, blue ribbon commission to lower violent crime in Kansas City. There’s only one problem, not one single police officer is on the committee.

It would certainly make sense to this newsdog that if you’re rolling out a committee to reduce violent crime, there maybe, just maybe ought to be representation by local law enforcement on that committee. Unless of course, you’re not really interested in reducing violent crime, and more interested in making it look like you’re doing something constructive on the matter.

The formation of the commission is baffling in another sense, as well, and it involves the city’s Kansas City No Violence Alliance [KC NoVA] program, something this news writing pooch thought the Mayor was all for. Even the name – No Violence Alliance – spells things out pretty clearly. Makes us wonder if KC NoVA is working so incredibly well, then why even bother forming this committee?

The fact of the matter is this: KC NoVA isn’t working so incredibly well, the homicide rate continues to grow and this committee is nothing more than another shell game by this administration to make it look like they’re doing something about this violent crime, by golly. Well by golly, maybe someone should invited the Popo to have a seat at the table given they’re the ones charged with keeping the peace. Fact: the committee is largely ceremonial, no new game changing city ordinance will come from its outgrowth and the homicide rate will once again top 100 this year.
